While researching the RNZAF Mustangs recently, I found a clipping showing a 42 Squadron aircraft (NZ2423) in colour. Sadly there was little left to identify the magazine it came from and I am hoping that one of the Forum members can recall when and where it appeared...and (even better) has a copy.
The photo shows it from the low on the starboard front 3/4, covers the top half of the centre spread and (I think) was part of an article titled on the preceeding page "Ohakea Album" in one of those odd 'circles and triangles' fonts.
Any help in identifying and locating a copy would be gratefully welcomed... TIA David

Hi David,
Long time no see. I wonder if perhaps it was something like the Auckland Weekly News? Or the Freelance. Both were general news magazines and sometimes featured RNZAF topics.
Any chance of seeing a scan as the layout of the magazine may spark some clues - and it'd be neat to see the photo too.
I've often wondered, what did the 42 Squadron Mustangs actually do?

42 Squadron used the Mustangs as target-tugs.

Hi Dave, phasselgren is right - they used them as banner towers, I assume for the Vampires. Sadly my source would not copy the image in any form, citing copyright concerns...hence the question. A real pity as it is one of the few images I have seen of the Mustangs in colour and in service. David

David,
I was going through some NZ Wings magazines today and in the December 1993-January 1994 issue there's a section called 'Ohakea Album'. I'd forgotten all about this but it is coloured photos taken at Ohakea at various points between 1953 and 1958 by photographers Ron Brazier and Brian Darrah.
In the four page spread there are beautiful coloured photos of the following static aircraft: - 42 Sqn Mustang NZ2423 complete with target tow gear visible. A Devon in the background. Sometime btw 1955-57
- Avro Vulcan XA897 (in silver scheme) visiting in Sept 1956
- Harvard NZ1077 and a Bristol Freighter both in silver schemes, Sept 56
- CB-17G 0-3798 (yes, a B-17 variant) that visited during Operation Handclasp in May 1954
- KB-29M 0-7268 (a B-29 variant) taxiing past two of the four F-84 Thunderjets visiting for Op. Handclasp (all six aircraft were here from Japan)
- Mustang NZ2410 of 2TAF, date unknown
- Three silver Harvards on the line
- Line-up of around 15 Vampire FB-5's on the flightline during Air Force Day 1954. Closet to camera NZ5754 has red wingtips for some reason.
- A view from an elevated height of the flightline during Air Force Day 1954, showing crowds around aircraft. In shot are three Devons, four TAF Mustangs (2 x Auck, 1 x Chch, 1 x Otago), a Harvard, a Bristol Freighter, Dakota NZ3551, an Avenger tug and an RAAF Neptune. Interestingly if we tried, we could actually replicate that scene again nd with about half of them being the actual aircraft.
- A Shackleton which accompanied the Sept 56 Vulcan
- Line up of the four Mustangs at AFD 54 from gorund level. Interestingly one has a blue tipped spinner, probably an Auck one.
- Neptune from ground level
Excellent shots. Does anyone know those photographers? It'd be neat to see what elese they took.

Hi Dave, Well done! That sounds like the mag. Now: anyone got a spare copy or one they care to sell? Any reasonable (and some unreasonable) price considered! Thanks, David Muir
