... it's in here somewhere, chaps!! Found! Even when we KNEW where it was, it took quite some finding, making me believe that if NZ5517 is to be found, it'll be by accident! In a big cargo net Smoke for the helo... ... the cavalry arrive! .. and out it goes, leaving us to walk the 3 and a bit hours out! ... the guys who went in. Concorde at Chch airport. NASAs flying telescope - a C141A - was there too, and I got a look through that!

Where did the wreckage go to, Wigram?
I have heard all about Little Malaya but seeing it really brings home how much it does look like tropical jungle. Hard to believe its in cold old Canterbury.

What I was told all those years ago was that it was parked in a tree in the late 50s/early 60s on an Army co-op exercise - I shall check with a colleague - and yes; the wreckage went to Wigram, though I took a small piece of wing leading edge as a souvenir!

Man that is a wreck alright. Was it a fatal accident? I got a late Xmas present from my brother in law. The pictorial history of the Auster (came from Amazon in the US!) and it shows a photo of an early Auster which crashed. The fuselage was perfectly straight from the tail right up to the doors and then the front was all pushed in and up so it must have gone in near vertical but a lot faster than BRA did. Not a pretty sight to see here. I wonder if I have any bits off her? I have a "boot" cowl that is camoflaged that is off an ex RNZAF Auster which is reasonably straight and which i'm giving to Anthony for his T7 at least as a pattern plus various electrical bits and bobs that might be military.

Recovery in 88 or 89.
No, I don't think it was a fatal; it was very low and very slow and just sort-of fell into a tree from what I was told!! The pilots I believe were Army blokes on a photo exercise and they both got out OK. I'm also sure that the engine and one or two other bits were salvaged at the time.
Once again, I'm dredging my memory here and the info I'm remembering may well be apocryphal!! Besides, that particular organ is prone to failure nowadays and probably needs re-booting!!

When I was at 3TTS in 1975 we got 'volunteered' to go walkabout in Little Malaya. Was summer and persisited down. Used half parachutes as bivvies. Great fun.
