That's amazing - 50,000 people and a visiting aircraft park with only 12 aircraft?! Is that correct about the visiting aircraft ? I went into the visiting aircraft park last thing Thursday and yes, there were 12 aircraft there. The bad news is that at least three of them were (as far as I know) local aircraft that were not participating in the event and had therefore been parked down there out of the way. Went back on the Sunday early evening and there were 15 or so in residence. Another 5 or 6 had already departed the field during the time I walked down there. I can remember going into the visiting aircraft park at Wanaka at a pre-digital-camera WOW and running out of film, there were so many helos and fixed wing parked there. Yes, certainly the weather would have played a part - I know DXQ was scheduled to fly down from Whenuapai but cancelled out due weather. However, the appallingly bad treatment traditionally handed out to those people who arrive at airshows by private aircraft by almost all organizers have obviously dissuaded a lot of aviators - including me - from this type of arrival. I have complained in depth about this poor treatment in previous posts elsewhere on the forum, but have yet to see any improvement. flyernzl is currently at Fox Glacier township

As they are slow coming, here's a couple more of mine. Jurgis tucked under the DC3, he also did barrel rolls around it.

Apart from the Hercules, Iroquois and NH90 was there anything else displayed by the RNZAF?

Genuine query about WoW here; has there ever been a 'headline act' as it were - and advertised as such - like there have been at overseas shows I've been to - e.g. the Vulcan in Jersey, BBMF at Duxford and the SU 37 in Paris some years back?? I don't recall Dad ever saying anything about such a thing....

I don't recall Dad ever saying anything about such a thing.... I'm not sure if it was explicitly advertised as such, but the Zero in 2010 was prominent, along with the Hornets. The jet racing was the headliner this year from my view of the publicity. 2012 had wing-walkers from memory? Many enthusiasts chose to go to the RNZAF 75th show instead.

The Gold Pass was introduced in 1992 to help finance the Buchons appearance, which I imagine was a headliner - same with the G-10 configured Buchon in 96, the Polis in 98 and the Wildcat in 02.

Some questions for my Airshow Archive:
There are four Aero L-29 Delphins registered in New Zealand, ZK-VAU, ZK-SSU, ZK-JET and ZK-JRF. Which three were at Wanaka over the weekend? And who were the pilots of each?
What serial numbers were the NH90 and Iroquois there?
What is the aircraft that has RGO on the side as its rego, as it does not appear on the Civil Register online.
Which Scout took part in the show and what were all the other helicopters and gyros?

Absolutely there were advertised headline acts, the Buchon, the Bf109, the Wildcat, etc all got press long before the event to draw people into attending. Newspaper reports, local TV and aviation media all covered such events beforehand in the good old days.

Oh, and when the Corsair and P-40 returned to NZ for WOW 2004 there was a TV news item a few weeks before the event saying they'd be headlining the event too.

My 2 cents. My wife and I have just got back from the airshow after 3 days in the silver stand. Traffic management was was super slick, the weather gods smiled on us for all 3 days, the flying was excellent as was the commentary, food and trade stands and ground displays where also good. Overall nothing to complain about really. I was reading some of the comments posted before and after the show. I think for some of us here, after having been to many airshows, and being spoilt by having one of the largest warbird collections for a small country anywhere in the world, maybe we all have become a bit blase about our airshows. The bar has been continuously lifted for years and years and even I have been guilty of thinking that its just the same-old same-old. One has to remember how lucky we have been for many years. Most of these aircraft are privately owned, and sheer cost of rebuilding and owning even a GA aicraft in these times is staggering, let along a rare warbird. Imagine if the owners for these magnificent aircraft thought "screw it people have already seen a spitfire" and decided that a holiday would be better, rather than the effort and money required to make it down? I can only imagine the reaction. Perhaps this is the reason why some of the regulars didnt show...who knows. So from the the guy who took my ticket to the display pilots, I thankyou for the effort you put in just so I could enjoy seeing your aircraft. Thankyou and I look forward to seeing you fly again next time.

Iroquois NZ3815 on the ground, and NZ3816 in the air, and Seasprite NZ3601. The NH-90's weren't displayed or accessible on Saturday, I don't know about Sunday. Delfins - ZK-JET (camouflage), ZK-VAU (Bort 45) and ZK-SSU (Bort 64). Pilots were the visiting american air racers, Lee Behel, Rick Vandam and John Kokshoorn. Couldn't tell you who was in which though. Scout was ZK-HJG

Thanks Sam.
It must have been Dove of Peace I saw fly north over Cambridge a few months back. I wonder where it went.

Thanks Sam. It must have been Dove of Peace I saw fly north over Cambridge a few months back. I wonder where it went. The hangar it lives in is still marked up for it, so maybe it was in there. See amendment for the Iroquois serials above.
