If it was just taken out of storage I would expect to see bars either side of the roundel, where the USAAF star was overpainted. Faint marks on either side of the roundel show the bars have probably been overpainted or stripped off. There also appears to be some form of rack under the wing. I suspect this is a bit later in the Mustangs career - this is probably the elusive picture of a 42sqn target tug!

Looking more closely the two Mustangs behind have bars on their roundels and look to be Canterbury examples as they're very dark. I thought by that stage the Mustangs were all painted silver but to my eyes (it could be just a bad scane) this one looks to be bare metal. I wonder if it was a recently activated attrition airframe?

Well, checking records, NZ2418 served with 4 Sqn, but that means nothing as they seem to have swapped the aircraft around a bit. It was not used as a target tug though Bruce.
