Air Vice marshal Graham Lintott appeared as a guest on TVNZ's 'Breakfast' show this morning to talk about the RNZAF's 70th Anniversary. He said the anniversary will be marked the same way as it is every year, with parades on each base and a church service at the Wellington cathedral. He became less comfortable when Kay mentioned it was his 52nd birthday today, and Paul Henry asked "Are you as old as the Hercules?". When the AVM retorted he was much older and they were just over 40, Henry replied along the lines of he looked much better for it than the tired old Hercules and called them the old men of the skies. Mr Lintott didn't look very impressed.

It's going to happen though, there will be a CAF soon who is younger than some of the aircraft! No mention of the Museum then? Fine way to celebrate 70 years.

The CFS's Harvard and Tiger Moth are already in their late 60's.

I was at Ohakea when Lintott was base commander. I have a lot of time for him. He went out on a limb in 2000 when he advised the base that 'notwithstanding RNZAF standing orders', he would allow booze in barracks. It would run on common sense and be self policing. If everyone was sensible you could have mates in your room or tv lounge and chop some piss. He was quick to advise the base that there was an 0800 DOB IN A DICK number and the Base Warrant Officer would be interested to hear of those who were keen to wreck it all for others.

He made it pretty clear at the time that he was pushing new grounds and he wouldn't take any shit! I'd be interested to see what the base does these days.

Sounds like a reasonable kind of guy.

Yep I would agree that he is a nice guy and was a good Base Commander at Ohakea. His leadership style reminded me a lot of Rick Bulger's from a few years earlier. He always related well to the troops and believed in common sense prevailing over BS...
