Fit one of those, and you'd get a whole new meaning to the 'Super Rallye'.

Peter, Don Subritzky says that it was at Mangere in the light aircraft park that CDC was damaged by the gale, but he can't remember the date.

Thanks for the info. I assume 'Mangere' means Auckland International?

The next batch of Rallyes arrived in 1964. First out of the box was Rallye Club c/n 5349 which became ZK-CGY with Seabrook Fowlds in May 1964. This aircraft went to the Northern Wairoa AC at Dargaville, presumably as a replacement for ZK-CDC ZK-CGY at the old Dargaville strip August 1966At AESL Hamilton 21Oct1967, presumably for engine workIn June 1970, ownership was transferred to Argo Finance Ltd., Auckland who hired it to G Roberts, Frankton. Anyone know of his activities? R A Cotton, Te Awamutu, took ownership on 15Aug1973, and passed it on to R J Ormond, Culverden from 12Jul1976. The final owner of ZK-CGY was M H McLeod of Raumati South from 19Dec1989. This Rallye was damaged in a storm at Paraparaumu 31Jan91 and was written off with the registration being cancelled on 30Jan1992. There will now be a short hiatus in the Rallye thread while I evict some tenants. Could get messy. In the meantime, amuse yourselves by coming up with a suitable caption for the following photo of ZK-CGY. Best caption gets a chocolate fish:

++ Rego on those a bit hard to read, but judging by the c/s and date I'd say ZK-BZZ

The second MS885 Super Rallye to arrive in NZ was c/n 5394, and this became ZK-CGZ with Seabrook Fowlds in May 1964. It then moved on to NZ Aerosales Ltd. and was operated by them at their Paraparaumu-based flying school. ZK-CGZ at Rotokawa 3Oct1964Ownership passed to R T Fullerton-Smith, Ongarue, as from 11Sep1967. ZK-CGZ in private ownership, after an 'incident' at Taumaraunui February 1969Presumably repaired, ZK-CGZ turned at low altitude after t/off, stalled & dived into ground near Lake Rotoiti, Rotorua, 13Apr74. There may have been some thoughts of a rebuild, as the registration lingered on until 20Oct1988.

I wonder if CGZ had a nosewheel leg failure like BZZ had? damage looks similar! (Aerospatiale said they had no records of it occurring before! - yeah right!)

Rallye Club c/n 5347 was also registered to Seabrook Fowlds in February 1965, and became ZK-CKL. The NZ Aerosales Flying School Ltd. at Paraparaumu took this Rallye as well. A rally of Rallyes? ZK-CKL at Paraparaumu early in 1965It may have been returned to Seabrooks for resale in late 1967, as it was seen at Ardmore at that time. ZK-CKL in the storage hangar, Ardmore, 1Oct1967It moved to the Waikato Aero Club in January 1968 and then to B S Nairn, Nelson, in February 1971. Dennis Thompson International Ltd. had it on their sales lot at Ardmore from October 1972, but it moved on fairly quickly to J W Peek Ltd., Ruwaro, the following month. ZK-CKL at Tauranga in March 1975The final owners of this Rallye were C F & V M MacKenzie of Scargill from 8May1975. ZK-CKL crashed near the Hurunui River mouth 23Apr76, and the registration was cancelled on 12May1976.

The final Rallye Club imported by Seabrook Fowlds was c/n 5348 which became ZK-CKM in February 1965. It was speedily delivered to the Ruawai Aero Syndicate based at - you guessed it - Ruawai - the same month, but appeared at the Ardmore open day in March on the Seabrook Fowlds stand ZK-CKM at Ardmore 13Mar1965, noted as white with red trimIt stayed based at Ruawai for some years, but the maintenance was carried out at Rex Aviation's Ardmore workshops At Ardmore 27Apr1968, obviously after a repaint at some stageZK-CKM passed to P L Valiant, Nelson from 21Oct1971, to Central Aircraft Maintenance Ltd., Hamilton in December 1971, and to J H Barker, Te Awamutu in April 1973. He kept it for some years, and then sold to M T O Quaife, Christchurch in October 1981. Partners S A Lindsay, S L Saville & M T O'Connor joined Quaife in the the ownership in November 1982, and they sold to A M T Simcox, Napier in April 1991. T M Page, Napier was the next owner from 19Oct1993, and he sold to D A Gibson, Taupo in September 2004 ZK-CKM in 'egg-yolk' colours at Taupo 10Mar2007ZK-CKM moved to Kaikohe with J E Schepens in July 2009 and is still current.

With the tragic death of Lloyd Seabrook and the sale of the last of the imported batches of Rallye aircraft, Seabrook Fowlds had moved away from any involvement with aviation by mid-1965. Later that same year Morane-Saulnier became part of Sud Aviation, and that company continued to build Rallye variants. In the late 1970s the local agency was picked up by Domtrac Equipment Ltd., and they imported two SOCATA MS893E Rallye GT180s. The first of these, c/n 12573, had been registered as F-BXYM to SOCATA in April 1976. It arrived in NZ in early 1978, and after assembly became ZK-FOX on 21Jun1978. The aircraft was owned by Clutha F McKenzie, then based at Scargill, North Canterbury. ZK-FOX at the Wigram 50th anniversary of the Southern Cross landing, 10Sep1978 Mr McKenzie has since relocated to the Greta Valley area and still operates this Rallye. The second Rallye 180GT to arrive was c/n 12984, which had been registered to SOCATA, Toussus-le-Noble, as F-GAYA on 10Aug1977. It had served as a company demonstrator for the European market before departing for New Zealand. Imported by Domtrac, it was registered as ZK-ERP to D F Barker, Karakariki, Waikato, on 28Jun1979. ZK-ERP under covers at Rukuhuia 22Aug1979. This was the only time I ever saw this machine as it, also, seemed to have spent its life based in the backblocks. ZK-ERP was destroyed in a gale at Ardmore 6Sep95 with the registration cancelled 0n 13Nov1995. The dealers had expected more sales of the Rallye 180GT due to its good short-field performance, but these did not eventuate. However, this is not the end of the story . . .

In the late 1970s, SOCATA planned to develop light aircraft of new design and terminate production of the Rallye. Therefore they sold a license for production of the Rallye to the Polish State aviation company PZL, the aircraft being produced in its Warsaw factory as the PZL Koliber (Humming Bird). Dougal Dallison had the NZ agency for PZL and, as well as importing a number of Wilga, also imported two PZL-110 Koliber 150A. The first aircraft, c/n 04940063 was registered as ZK-PZA to his company, Alternate Aviation Ltd. based near Whenuapai, on 13Mar1995. ZK-PZA in a very plain scheme at Ardmore mid-1995The aircraft was leased to the Wakatipu AC, Queenstown, from mid-June to mid-October 1996, and then returned to Alternate. It was then operated by the RNZAF Aviation Sports Club (Power Section) at Whenuapai from November 1996 until June 1998. Unfortunately I did not fly that aircraft during that time, which I now regret. ZK-PZA now a bit more photogenic at Ardmore for maintenance 1999Returning to Alternate Aviation, ZK-PZA was sold to M P J Wilson on 30Nov1999. Mt Wilson then took the aircraft to Australia where it became VH-MKO on 7Apr2000, with the New Zealand registration being cancelled on 20Mar2000.
