I've had a flight in a Hunter T7, but from an occasional association with the Lightning in operational service with the RAF, you will need very, VERY, deep pockets and your own oil field to run one!

I was thinking the same. One of my mates was an Engineering Officer at Binbrook back in the day. We all thought then that the Lightning was going to make the RAF broke, I still remember CB's groans of despair when the postings were read out. 'Why me ...... ?' He was a Londoner and on his posting request he wanted somewhere South of Lincoln. They did say that they took that into consideration. Binbrook was just a little to the North... He was one of the brightest guys in the pool so I guess the Lightning force at that time will have required someone with a few smarts about him. It would have been a very demanding job. He did do a Lightning Leap though, - a trip over to Gütersloh in Germany in something like 12 minutes. EDIT************ Just did a Google search of Binbrook. The map makes me feel old, - they have Wigramised the place. Brookenby is just to the NW of Binbrook village. The satellite view tells it all. maps.google.co.nz/maps?q=Binbrook&ie=UTF-8&ei=3pEdUcnGA7HyigLpmoGACQ&ved=0CAsQ_AUoAg

There's more than a little truth in the old story that shortly after take-off in a Lightning on standard internal fuel, you started looking for somewhere to land.
Still, one of the most spectacular air show displays you will ever see and that was a Lightning going verticle!

I'll take a buccaneer, thanks. I wonder what happened to the Javelin they were restoring to flying condition?

From what I have heard from people who have flown Javelins, it should remain grounded for everyone's good. Not a well liked aeroplane at all.
