I was looking at something on IMDb and saw a link to this page called Upcoming WW2 Movies www.imdb.com/list/sROV3XlPh2g/?ref_=tt_rls_0Some are still in the pipeline but it looks like some are recent releases now. There are some intriguing stories there. I'd like to see the following some day: Into The White Saints and Sinners: Airborne Creed Leningrad St Nazaire Wartime Wanderers Monte Cassino Grace and Danger The Battle of Britain (!!!!!) Men At Arnhem The Battle of Midway Stalingrad (I wonder if it could be as good as the German-made film of the same name) No Better Place to Die Combat (the original TV series is excellent!) I was going to add Flying Tigers till I realised John Woo is the director, one of the worst directors ever!

There has already been a film of the St Nazaire raid: 1950s/60s?

What was that film called Colin? I have not seen it. There's a superb documentary on the St Nazaire raid done by Jeremy Clarkson, I watched it on Youtube a couple of years ago.
As for "already done" films, there have also been several films on the Battle of Britain; a really poo film on Midway; a really great film on Stalingrad; loads of films on American soldiers in France and the Ardennes; a very good film on Operation Market Garden; a film on the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and its sad aftermath; a film on The Flying Tigers and there's also a TV series in production on that subject too; but I don't think it matters so long as they tell good, accurate and decent stories, especially if they tell a story from a new angle.

What was that film called Colin? I have not seen it. The film was "Gift Horse", made in 1952, and followed the actual raid fairly accurately. Stars were Richard Attenborough and Trevor Howard. From my memory [as an ex-Sea Cadet,: yeah I know I did 26 years in two air forces but I was a Sea Cadet!] The Ship was one of the fifty ex-US Navy destroyers handed over to the RN by the US in return for use of Naval bases in places like Bermuda I think. When she eventually blew up at noon some hours after the raid, there were 300 german rubber neckers on board who went up with her! It was, for this schoolboy, a truly heroic action which resulted in 91 medal awards including five VCs. On the way back, one of the surviving MLs bumped into a German ship, the Jaguar, which invited the RN to surrender,an offer they declined and fought till most of them were killed. The gunner on the foredeck, wounded three times, was one of them, and was given a hero's treatment by the German captain. It would make a great film today!

Bit late to the party but thought I'd also throw a heads-up for "The Few" which is a mini series currently in development by Guy Ritchie's production company.
The Battle of Britain film that Dave lists above is currently having the screenplay written by Robert Towne.
Looking forward to both of these.
Cheers,
Tim

There was a thread on Flypast Forum a while back started by someone writing a film about Bob Stanford Tuck's wartime career too.
And lets not forget that now Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are working on a new Band of Brothers style mini-series focussing on USAAF bombers in Europe. I am really, really looking forward to that one.

Be nice to see it done, I suppose it's being based on "Fly For Your Life"? We're in for some treats on the big and small screens!

I think the way the discussion was going it might be actually based on the truth rather than Fly For Your Life. Let's hope. I cannot find the thread on that forum, their search engine is plain terrible.

I found it but had to use a Google search of the Flypast forum: linkAnd more over at Pprune: linkSounds interesting, the real battle once he finishes writing the thing is getting a studio/production house onboard to back it

I did Google and found that thread but it's not the same thread I was thinking of. there was one in the last 8 to 12 months. I recall in the thread there was discussion about the books Fly For Your Life and also Reach For The Sky being largely fiction.
I have not seen the Pprune thread, I'm not a fan of that forum - after my first post introducing myself was deleted because I mentioned I run this forum I cannot be bothered with them any more.

Although it may also be a different thread on the same topic.... I cannot see that discussion about how inaccurate the book is.

Thanks Dave (and Martin) for tracking it down. Hopefully it's still on the go. Tuck had a magnificent career and war which would suit a big screen adaptation.

The trailer for Stalingrad is on youtube (look for Stalingrad 2013). Looks OK, I think it's from the Russian Side. I agree the German film of the same name was excellent.
It's a pity there aren't more films on the Eastern Front considering it was, by a country mile the pivotal theater in WW2.
Monte Cassino may be interesting as well, particularly for us Kiwis

Monte Cassino may be interesting as well, particularly for us Kiwis I'm hopeful regarding this too Calum. One of my great-uncles was with 7 Anti-tank at Cassino so it's a battle that interests me.

I wonder which angle it will be from. I hope like hell it doesn't glorify that idiot General Mark Clark's role.
