I wonder what the operating costs are. Just trying to cut down my $100 per week in gas to work and back.

Or....wouldnt it be hilarious if it succeeded and turned out to be the "next big thing"? Kinda feel sorry for these guys, theyve put their heart and soul into it and theyre destined to be mocked mercilessly for it. I'd buy shares, but I'm still waiting for the money from a Nigerian prince to arrive...

After talking with the Martin Jetpack chap at Masterton and seeing the video there of the all new design version flying, I am a lot more convinced that it will be successful than i used to be. In fact I think it could be quite a goer.
After all, I'll bet the inventor of the segway thing was probably in the same boat but look how they have now caught on. Every security guard in chrisendom seems to have one at big events now! Imagine what secutity could do with a jetpack!

Of course the Segway designer was eventually killed by his invention when it failed to successfully negotiate a cliff !
Has the MJP actually flown properly with a human yet , other than tethered flights ?

Dean Kamen who invented the Segway is alive and well. It was Britsh millionaire Jim Heselden, who had bought the company, that drove off the cliff and killed himself. The media for some reason claimed he was the inventor or designer, he was merely the owner of the company.

Though Jim Heselden was no slouch in the inventing department himself. He came up with the "Hesco Bastion" which allows the quick assembly of earth barriers for flood control, military fortifications etc.

Ha!
I'd love to invest in MJP, much more exciting than a bunch of dams. Will keep an eye on that.

You would have to ask if a market really exists for this product, full points for all the design and engineering work that has gone into it, but at the end of the day I think it is likely to remain a curiousity, the cost will be as much as a good LSA with much less utility

Jetpack company gets clearance for manned flightsBy MATTHEW THEUNISSEN - APNZ | 2:02PM - Monday, August 12, 2013Martin Aircraft Company's latest jetpack prototype.CHRISTCHURCH-based Martin Aircraft Company has revealed details of its latest jetpack prototype, which it says has taken a "quantum leap" in performance over the previous model.
The company had made huge progress in recent months in increasing flight time of the aircraft, and had full Civil Aviation Authority certification for a manned flight, company chief executive Peter Coker said.
"Changing the position of the jetpack's ducts has resulted in a quantum leap in performance over the previous prototype, especially in terms of the aircraft's maneuverability," Mr Coker said.
The company's focus was now on further improving the jetpack's performance through engine refinements in order to ready it for commercial sale.
"The jetpack continues to attract interest from potential customers and investors worldwide," Mr Coker said.
"We are focussing initially on developing the jetpack for use as a first responder vehicle and heavy lift unmanned air vehicle."
The Martin Jetpack, which was named one of Time Magazine's top 50 inventions for 2010, was the result of years of work by Christchurch inventor Glenn Martin in his garage.
It is intended for commercial use in areas such as emergency response, airborne inspection, security, defence and agriculture.www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10911448

The press releases are always going on about using it for SAR, can't see how a 30min endurance makes it suitable for this role versus a helicopter which has the additional advantage of crew and payload capability
