On Trademe is this interesting item: www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=584855195This is the sump off the Alex Radford Radial engine built in 1932. Those who follow home-built history will already know this engine had a catastrophic failure after take-off. As one would expect, the sump still has it's original damage, and part of the crank-case attached. There has only ever been one of these.
The shot is taken on 15 September 1940 - Darby West [Test pilot] is posing. The bottom surface of this sump is visible between the lower two cylinders in this shot. I'm not up with 'home built history' can someone elaborate? A quick google doesnt throw up much, other than it probably being a form of Lincoln Sports - if no putting two and two together what is now ZK-BMV ? Thanks in advance

Yes, it was used in one of the incarnations of the Lincoln Sport BMV. I don't know all the details but the Lincoln has been rebuilt at least 3 times under different ownership - each time it has emerged with a number of changes in structure or powerplant. The current Bristol cherub engine was aparently fitted immediately after this failure.
