Wow, that could have been any of the shows I've been to in the last couple of years, except for the suits! To think that was 2yr before The Falklands.
Thanks for posting these.

Great photos, Chris! They've really stood up well over the years.

Thanks, I've got dozens of boxes of slides stashed away, but not many are aviation-related - the photography bug bit well before the plane bug got hold. However the next challenge would be to root out some Skyhawk photos from the days I spent hanging over the fence at Ohakea (when I should have been studying at Massey!).

Chris, do you prepare the slides before scanning in any particular way (like blowing off the dust, or cleaning in some way)? I've also tried scanning slides but your results are far superior to what I've achieved. Also, what scanner are you using, resolution, etc.? Thanks.
PS - the obvious answer has just occurred to me - my slides start as crap, so they also scan as crap!

Hi Pete, no special preparation, however I should confess up front to spending a bit of time removing dust specks on the computer after scanning - a couple of slides were quite bad. I use the cloning tool to duplicate an area of sky or cloud that matches the offending spot or squiggle. Next time I would try and clean the slides first. Colours are pretty much as scanned.
I used an Epson V330 Photo scanner with transparency/film holder, 3200 dpi. It will go higher res' but this setting produced files of similar size as my DSLR; any higher would give very large files and the film grain would probably become the limiting factor.
Cheers, Chris

Great rendition of the photos! Even the BOB fly past would bring back proud memories for some despite being overexposed in the original. I am impressed with the quality and accuracy of these prints from a slide! Thanks for sharing.

Some of the best scans I've seen, they really do not look their age. My favourite is the shot of the Tornado and the crowd. Just cool (and having seen a Tornado take-off at that range, loud too!).

Also worth noting that 1980 was the Red Arrows first show season with the Hawk. And I built my Red Arrows Hawk from the matchbox kit only a couple of years later when it was still considered the "new" aircraft. Suddenly I feel old .

Excellent stuff from back in the past. 1980 was my first year with an SLR camera, a Pentax K1000 with a 50mm lens!! The Reds performed atBroughton with their new Hawks, I must admit their first year seemed a bit sedate after the Gnat. At least 3 types no longer with us in the UK. The Sea Harrier, in fact any Harrier The Jaguar, all the RAF GR1 lacked was a Radar for a2a, oh and bigger engines, and a longer range ;D. The Tornado F2 prototype ZA254, saw it display the same year at Woodford, Manchester, yes it rained, it always rained at Woodford. Noisiest thing since the Lightning. (I loved the Lightning) Please More....
