If you think we had it hard on our recruit / basic courses Bear Grylls taken some jokers on a French Foreign Legion basic entry course in the Sahara Desert. Of course the Legion no longer do tehse courses in the desert but the desert is considered its spiritual home.

It was on TV a few years back. Where do they do their courses now then?

I think it's mainland France. I read a book a couple of years ago written by a pommy former legionnaire who did five years during the 1990s & i think he said the mainland. I checked the website and looks like it maybe Aubagne. www.legion-recrute.com/en/?SM=0 The author was quite critical of them and he was an ex para going by memory. They march with a 79 step minute cadence and a short step.

I had a look at their pay scales. The pay isn't too bad considering they are clothed and accommodated.

That's about the only good thing. Definitely not my cup of tea. Why carry your home around when it can carry you around and give three hot squares [meals] a day

Thanks for posting this, an excellent series and I've now watched all of them.
I don't recall seeing this on TV before.... The Legion breeds some tough lads!!

The series screened twice on Prime TV a couple of years ago. It was the first thing I'd seen Grylls in that I a actually gained respect for the guy in, and it made me realise he is a serious special forces dude and not just some twat on TV.
