That's nothing new. When I was in the RNZAF lots of people serving had second jobs. In fact half of the waiters, barmen and shopkeepers in Blenheim on Friday night and the weekend seemed to be RNZAF staff moonlighting.
And at Base Auckland I remember one of my colleagues would leave the day's work packing parachutes and start an evening shift delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut simply because the RNZAF wages were not enough to keep him and his family fed.

At Ohakea, there were lots of airmen working off-base in their own time, including me! I drove trucks for Funnells Transport in Bulls, and worked also for the Labour MP for PN, one Joe Walding, who had the catering contracts for various racecourses around the area. I made more money moonlighting than the air force paid me!
