NZ38235 & 70231; Born Rotorua, 22 Sep 1916; RNZAF 4 May 1938 to 31 Aug 1959; Wireless Operator, Wireless Operator-Air Gunner, Navigator/Wireless, Technical Signals. Citation Distinguished Flying Medal (30 Jul 1940): [75(NZ)Sqn RAF (Wellington)] This airman has been continuously employed as wireless operator/air gunner since January, 1940, on operational work, and has proved himself thoroughly efficient in his most important duties. He has taken part in thirteen bombing attacks over enemy territory. This airman was selected as the wireless operator on a long reconnaissance flight over northern Norway, and although working under the most difficult conditions was able to give valuable assistance to the navigation and safe return of each flight. Sergeant Williams’ untiring efforts and devotion to duty have been outstanding. Sqn Ldr Williams, as an LAC, was the wireless operator on the long-range reconnaissance flight to Norway captained by A A N Breckon (qv). An original member of the NZ Sqn formed in 1939 to ferry Wellingtons from England to NZ. During Sep 1939-Sep 1942 he served with 99 Sqn RAF (Wellington) and 75(NZ)Sqn, flying 24 sorties with the latter. His DFM was the second of the war to a member of the RNZAF. From Oct 1944 to Jul 1945 he served as Staff Officer Signals with 1 (Islands) Group in the South Pacific. In 1947 he navigated on a Mosquito ferry flight from England to NZ. Died Lower Hutt, 29 Sep 1992. Errol
