A massive well done to Helitranz helicopter pilot Steve Clarke who happened to spotted an exhausted and desperate fisherman, Tainui Hale (sp?), on cliffs after he'd had his dinghy swamped and sunk. The fisherman had been living on a deserted island for three days before being spotted by Clarke who was taking a heli-fishing party out on a job. Clarke and his customer Chris Cook plucked Hale off the cliff in an excellent display of precise flying. They showed footage of it in 3 News, taken by one of the other fishing party members who'd been dropped on dry land before they attempted the rescue. He lives out there on one of the islands and was fishing. His boat got swamped when the swell came up and sank.

Ok thanks. Although one would think that in waters like that something larger than a dingy would be safer. Doesn't take much to swamp a dingy and where was his EPIRB, VHF marine radio, or even a cellphone in a waterproof bag. It was just pure luck that the helicopter happened to fly by and see him. Probably one of my iwi too. You go on the water you take the appropriate safety precautions. He's an idiot.

Agree great flying. At the end of the TV3 clip "the rescued one" was off out to sea again with 3 onboard, one sitting in the bow,no visible lifejackets and not exactly doing 5k within 200 metres of land either. Some people never learn!

The stuff article reads that he was pig hunting with his dogs and had lost them ( doesn't say whether they drowned or ran off somewhere)

His cellphone dropped into the sea, Mr Expert! Yes well it should have been in a waterproof bag and fastened to his arm or around his neck. It is basic seamanship and was / is also taught as part of the Coast Guard Boatmasters Course. I was taught seamanship in the navy and I hold a Boatmasters Certiificate. I also drove the Lancer IRB in the navy as well. It's the same as people flying and not doing preflight checks etc., nor file flight plans, or bother to have a radio to communicate with ATC. There are people you won't fly with because they are dangerous. There are people I won't go to sea with because they are dangerous. They don't think of nor care about those who will have to put their lives on the line searching for them if or when they go missing and / or need rescuing. So if you have participated in a SAR where someone who didn't use some common sense and needed rescuing because they didn't have safety & emergency gear etc., then you'll know what I'm talking about.
