How many flying P-51's are there in NZ at the moment and could anyone supply me with contact details of owners/pilots. This is a bit of a long shot and more than likely out of my budget - but there is no harm in asking I guess? THE PLAN - I am getting married in January next year (South Canterbury)and I would like to see if I could arrange a fly over about the time of the ceremony. I have seen a P-51 fly up the coast early this year - he appeared to be harassing a Harvard and I've often thought that if by any chance there might be a Mustang heading up to Omaka from the south or vice-versa, perhaps we could arrange a we strafing run at our guests, or something a bit more sedate at least. It would only work if there happened to be an airshow about that date Jan 11th @ 1400hr. I could arrange some $ to cover incurred costs, and there is an airstrip 10 - 15 km away if there happened to be a spare seat for a quick spin Any ideas appreciated. John

There's one based in Wanaka and one based in Auckland. Pretty sure the only airshow happening around that time is in Tauranga.

What is based at Rangiora that might be suitable? Would cut down on the cost.

Don't do it. You will regret it....
Just go for a fly in the aeroplane instead, - you will be a much happier man.

A flight in a P-51 would be something . May I suggest a flight in a DH.82 or Chipmunk .Might be just as rewarding at a fraction of the heavy metal cost?

Would you settle for a Titan Mustang Flypast? They are built down your way, aren't they?

There is definitely a T-51 flying out of Rangiora on a regular basis and I'd say the pilot would be happy to help out

It's usually part of the ANZAC flyover. Not sure who owns it

Hi Rag,
Ivan Campbell owns the pretty T-51. Know him well, he lives just north of Rangiora, at Lowburn. Graham Bethel owns the Ardmore based Mustang. He lives in Canterbury but doesn't tend to fly his Mustang down here unless Wanaka/Onaka shows are on. I have access to a friend's Tiger Moth down at Rangitata Island. A gorgeous aeroplane for a wedding fly-over/photos. I used it at a client's wedding last November - great backdrop for photos. PM for contact details on these guys.

The real thing is around $2.2K for 20min on so to fly in as pax, so you don't want to be bankrolling something that expensive & transiting too far

One of those flights was out of Auckland International Airport (at the time of the big airshow there) and the other one out of Gisborne Airport. Each flight cost me $1,000 and was supposed to be about 30 minutes in duration, although the Gisborne flight (low-level in the Waimata Valley) was about 40 minutes.

Get with the times KTJ! :-) It's been that much and more for quite some time. Most of us were earning considerably less in the "mid-1990s"than what we are now by the way (nearly 20 years ago!!). :-)

That Auckland International Airport airshow was in November 1992 so more than 20 years ago. My initial thought was that going by the way everything else has inflated in price/value in the past 20 years, the current asking prices for such rides would actually be better value now than they were then. However I put the $1,000 into the Reserve Bank's Inflation Calculator and it states that in today's money that Grand is now worth $1,572.23. That is an increase by 57.2% however the calculator doesn't take into account that a litre of avgas and a litre of oil has not risen by the same percentage as the dollar has over that time, thanks to Gulf wars, oil rig spills, greedy fatcats, etc. It would be interesting to know the price of Avgas and Oil in November 1992, compared with now. Not that it means a jot really because on top of the fuel we must add all the other costs that go into such a ride - airport landing fees, hangarage, general maintenance, pilot's time, etc. I still think for a bucket list once in a lifetime event (or twice if you're like KTJ ) the current prices are pretty good.
