3 News is reporting that a woman in Hamilton last night took some sleeping tablets, and then sleep walking she got into her car and drove to Auckland, then turned round and drove to Tauranga and onto Mount Maunganui, and ended up at her old address. Her friends had alerted the police when she left at midnight and police were tracking her cell phone! She was even texting (replying to friends' texts).
She had no knowledge after she arrived of anything, as she'd been in a state of sleep throughout.
Unbelievable. I know there are some dozey drivers on the road but wow.
A sleep specialist they interviewed said this was the fifth such case he'd seen!

Back when I was driving freight trains at night between Gisborne and Napier, sometimes on the return trip, you'd leave Napier in the wee hours with around 1,000 tonnes or so behind the locomotives and drive all the way to Gisborne and couldn't remember a thing between departing Napier and arriving at Gisborne. I often used to wonder if we were driving those trains in our sleep at times, up and down all the hills enroute.

Bugger that. I saw it on the 6pm news and shook my head a mixture of wonder and dismay. Mind you it sounds like she drove better than some of the others on the road who are supposed to be fully awake. The mind and the brain are truly mysterious.

Did she get a fine for being on the phone while driving?

That event would be just about normal for a JAFA!

They are talking about solving the problem by taking her licence away. Am i missing something here?

They are also talking about charging her for driving whilst under the influence or similiar. However since she wasn't complis mentis at the time her lawyer could have a good defence. There is a lot of medical literature about people doing sleep walking.

Rather than her licence why not just hide her car keys?

Now when she gets up in her sleep state to drive, she will say to herself 'damm, they have taken my licence away so i can't drive' and go back to bed. Yeah right.
