Check out this article, it's great. But would this aircraft have actually had a smoke system for such an airshow act?

"MOCK" BATTLE.
AERONAUTICS AT HAMILTON.
STUNT DELUDES CROWD.
(By Telegraph.—Special to Star.") HAMILTON, Saturday.
For a few moments tragedy appeared to have overtaken a mock aerial battle staged between Flight-Lieutenant Allen and Pilot-Officer B. Kirkup at the Rukuhia air pageant this afternoon. The conclusion of the battle resulted in Flight-Lieutenant Allen being "shot down in flames." Helped by the announcer over the public address system, a portion of the audience was under the impression that Allen had really been shot down, when he dived down behind the trees and into a gully with smoke pouring out from his 'plane. Several thousands rushed towards the spot, members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade and an ambulance included, but great was the astonishment when Allen dived out of the clouds from behind the crowd and circled low overhead.

Diesel onto the exhaust or a smoke flare?

Yeah, quite possible. The barnstormers post WWI had smokers fitted to the likes of the SE5-A, Jenny's etc.

OK, interesting. Dave Allan was certainly a barnstormer, as well as Auckland Aero Club's CFI. He did air displays for the public every single weekend. And lots of the display was low as. NZ's predecessor to Ray Hanna I think.

From 1919, Major Jack Savage, RAF had a fleet of S.E.5A aircraft which were flown over London and other cities, which had perfectly adequate smoke systems.
