Foyle's War is a superb series. I have no idea why it has not yet made it to mainstream television. I got to watch it on DVD all the way through. A new series came out recently in the UK set after WWII too, which I haven't seen.
WWI Top Guns is good too, it's on Youtube. Although I don't like the programme's title considering Top Gun is a US Navy term invented in the 1960's...

Foyle's War is, indeed, an excellent series and it happens to be true to the era because the chief technical advisor is....The Imperial War Museum! I think they have captured the wartime Britain feeling exceptionally well with only some small errors. For example, Foyle holds a rank which wasn't introduced until after the war!

I would've thought TVNZ would've picked it up to run on TV One at the very least. I was first exposed to it when we lived in Norway where state broadcaster NRK showed it. I love it and have a couple of the series on DVD. A couple of episodes centred around Foyle's son Andrew and his flying Spits in the RAF. All the shows have a great sense of period atmosphere with the clothing, sets and trappings of wartime Britain. One of the best series to come out of the UK over recent years.

You obviously haven't lived in NZ for a while. TVNZ is trash now. They stopped being serious broadcasters years ago and now only air crappy reality shows, soaps and cooking series. The only serious channels free to air now are TV3 and Prime in my opinion.

Is Prime still going, they used to have some good programmes? That reminds me, when we were back for a couple of months in 2008 staying round at my Dad's and he mostly had UKTV on the go saying it was slim pickings on the non-Sky channels.

We get bombarded with cooking shows, singing "talent" shows, renovation shows, and other forms of crap on free to air TV. The best Free To Air channel in years was TVNZ7 which had actual intelligent local content, NZ-made documentaries and science shows, etc. But the $40 million or so a year to run it was considered too much by the Government so it was canned. Really annoying.
Prime is the best of the channels now, a lot of its content comes from other Sky channels (Sky owns Prime these days). They play some good documentaries. But TV as a whole is pure drivel most nghts. I don't watch much anymore. To think I once wanted to work in that industry but no way now.

Oh, and virtually more ads than programme. At least it means I don't waste much time these days staring at the goggle-box!

Yep, lots of people used to come back from trips to Aussie saying the TV stank there. Now they come back and say it's much the same as here.
It's a shame such a vital and important tool for education and entertainment has been misused and dumbed down by greedy executives.

Reality TV is what's killing mainstream telly Dave. Unfortunately it's comparatively cheap to make and there's enough chumps and fame-seeking muppets to make it for years to come. It's a TV execs wet dream from a profit angle - or at least until (hopefully) in the future interest in it dies off, although that doesn't look on the cards just yet.

Yes I hate some of the crappy UNreality shows although we did watch Mitre 10 Dream home, mainly because it was just up the road(we went through the finished houses too). To each there own some people like this stuff but it seems to be everywhere. Teresa and I like a good drama/sci fi/ comedy (absolutely loved Fringe but to some its silly its all down to you like and don't like) I have My Sky and its a godsend for fast forwarding through the ads or recording something so I don't miss it. I watched a couple of episodes of Foyles War and enjoyed it. Dave did you watch Piece of Cake when it was on?

It's a good book too if you get a chance to read it. Although the book story deals with a Hurricane squadron and not Spitfires. Written by Derek Robinson.
