It would actually make an interesting and novel model, Sniff.
Helen Clark is to officially apologise to Vietnam veterans tomorrow for their poor treatment by the hippy public (brilliant!) so I wonder when she will officially apologise for this mistake too.

I heard in Jan that the 3 "missing" ones were deliberately kept in the hangar to be kept as demo fliers for potential buyers. Also heard that the contractor ran out of the latex covering and 3 were spared the outdoor life. My bet is that the contractor has not been to re-cover any of the 'hawks covering that is supposedly under warranty and therefore the remaining 3 are still in the hangar where they'll stay until dispatched to the scrap yard or a museum... the latter hopefully, would be good if Airforce World got another example that you could sit in Is that rust on the nose oleo of the T-bird?? bp2.blogger.com/_nV0MBgnf5tA/SDjLbSSj4UI/AAAAAAAAAWU/me5Ng2CiZ8U/s1600-h/P1070364.JPG

I heard in Jan that the 3 "missing" ones were deliberately kept in the hangar to be kept as demo fliers for potential buyers. They will ever fly again as demonstrators due to no current pilots and all the safety equipment being time-ex (that was why the last one was put into storage in 2004).

Is that rust on the nose oleo of the T-bird?? No its a corrosion preventative coating (CPC) - the same yellow looking stuff that is on the inside of the landing gear doors.

The 3 that where inside where not inside to be kept as demonstraters, Money was a factor to them not being covered up at the same time as the rest (straight from the horses mouth) I understand that all are now outside now and they look terrible. A guy i know who was a Skyhawk Engine Tech is chasing down work in Saudi to work on the new Typhoons and it looks pretty certain that he will go, such a shame that another Ex-RNZAF guy with so much talent will ply his trade else where other than NZ

Any idea on the fate of NZ6257? It will stay at Ohakea. One rumour is that it will become the new gate guard to replace the Vampire. Otherwise it will go on display at the Ohakea Exhibition Centre when it is eventually built.

I would prefer to see it go indoors than up on a pole. That goes for the Vampire too.

Have you been to NZ Craig? I guess you didn't make it as far as Ardmore by chance?
Nice shots of the white birds but rather sad seeing em like that.

I would prefer to see it go indoors than up on a pole. That goes for the Vampire too. Yes I agree. That was why the Vampire was taken down - it rotted away, to the point it was unsafe to leave it up there. '57 is pretty corroded already (the front fuselage is from a crashed ex USN TA-4 that was recovered from the sea) and the whole fin is fiberglass. If some of our "real" Skyhawks are retained for display at Museums (given that they aren't going to be sold for anything other than scrap!), then I would have no problem with '57 becoming a gate guard, but if all the "real" ones get turned into saucepans then the original intent of building '57 remains the same (to ensure a Skyhawk is displayed in NZ for future generations to see). The best place for it in this situation is inside. At least it is stored inside now, as is the former Ohakea Museum Strikemaster and Vampire gate guard remains.

Yes, I've been home to Christchurch - but as usual my organisation wasn't the best and I didn't catch up with everyone I was intending to. Was going to get in touch with you last week Don, but after returning from Blenheim last Wednesday time got away from me: too many people to see, and not enough time. ;D Was in Auckland for two days as well, but most of that time was spent visiting relatives - so still haven't been out to Ardmore, even though I've been to Auckland twice in the past three years. Colin, next time I'm there, you can give me a guided tour. Didn't even get out to the RNZAF Museum while I was back! Although I believe there's not much to see out there at the moment because of the history gallery refurbishment?

Was just looking through my website stats for the week and there are over 70 searches for A4 Skyhawk. When I made up the new site I forgot to add some photos of the Skyhawks so have just added 70 photos of the aircraft during the transition to Whitehawks. Now that approval of the sale has been granted I guess its time to "Show me the money" and in todays environment that might be difficult. Thanks to the handful of guys how took me to get the Skyhawk photos on the website.
