Due to a series of commissions, several being vintage kitsets supplied by the client, my focus has turned to RNZAF ETO aircraft, perhaps fitting for this year's 70th D-Day Anniversary. The most vintage of these kitsets was a genuine 1964 Monogram Hurricane Mk IIC/IV 48 HURRICANE 486 Sqn 1 005 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The subject aircraft is a Mk IIB Night Fighter with 486 Sqn RNZAF at RAF Wittering in July 1942 48 HURRICANE 486 Sqn 1 001 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr 48 HURRICANE 486 Sqn 1 002 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr Z3029 SA-R in which F/L Harvey Sweetman scored the squadron's first kill on 23/24 July 1942, a DO219 shared with an RCAF Beaufighter HURRICANE & Ventura II FinV2 007 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The wonderful old Monogram kitset is very basic, with raised panel lines and rivets, no wheel wells and no cockpit except the rear half-wall. I set about scratch building some cockpit detail - 48 HURRICANE 486 Sqn 1 016 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr 48 HURRICANE 486 Sqn 1 026 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr - largely unseen in the narrow confines of the fuselage and with the one piece canopy closed ... but, it's there. I didn't do anything about the wheel wells. With the exterior the objective was to retain the kit's original integrity so I finished it as a heavily weathered example with the raised panel lines and rivets picked out in bare metal. Hello, Harvey Sweetman was my great grandfather. So beautiful to see your work, proud of what he acheived. Wish I spoke to him more about the war while I had the chance.
