For around ten years, I was involved with a UK event called the Great Vintage Flying Weekend (or GVFWE). A simply wonderful, nostalgic weekend - a fly-in with - sometimes - a small flying display during the lunch-time period, it grew to be a unique event. Terry Booker, who bossed the event, drew upon a wide pool of aviation specialists, who gave of their best to put the event on. I was sorry, amongst many others, to see it pass. The economics were against it. However, to everyone who worked the show (and for many years, I flew from the USA to take part) it was simply - incredible. What I hope to do, is dig into the archives and share some of the images from a show that is no more...... Oh, and I should explain that the aircraft in the background is, of course, a Boeing 747 with the engines removed, and not as my friend said, "The world's biggest chuck glider!" This is a rara avis.... the De Havilland DH60G III Moth shortfinals.wordpress.com/2010/12/21/a-rather-splendid-moth/

I should explain that we kept the show moving from venue to venue, usually ex-RAF airfields, still owned by the MoD, but sometimes local airports - as we didn't want to annoy the locals with 400+ aircraft over the weekend on a regular basis! My favourite was the former RAF Hullavington (as a venue, that is - it was easy to lay out, and worked well). Here is a grand Anson Mk 19...and my write up on it. shortfinals.wordpress.com/2010/12/31/the-anson-saga-still-rumbling-on/

The Chrislea CH3 Super Ace Skyjeep Series 4 started out rare (only 6 produced), and now this is the only one left in the U.K. This particular example spent some time in Australia (see below), but made it back to the U.K., and is shown here on a dull day at the GVFWE at Hullavington. shortfinals.wordpress.com/2009/02/23/skyjeep-a-rara-avis/

Not airworthy as it has the fabric off the fuselage. Flyernzl (I think it was) piped up and mentioned he thought the Gipsy Major from it was possibly now in another aircraft!! Hope no-ones helped themselves to Reg's engine!! Rather sadly he said he wouldn't be able to fly it now anyway.

Britain has probably given rise to more eccentric aircraft designs (and aircraft designers) than almost any other country. That some of these rare designs of the 1920s and 1930s have survived (and are STILL flying) is a tribute to the aircraft preservation movement. The Civilian Coupe is a classic example of this - and it is even powered by a rare engine, the Armstrong Siddeley Genet Major radial. shortfinals.wordpress.com/2009/04/02/a-short-lived-civilian/
