If you were given the opportunity to travel back in time and spend, say, up to a day, back in any period with a digital camera and digital video camera, but you can only go to one location relating to NZ aviation, where would it be?
You can't be seen by the people back then, you can't interact, just observe and photograph.
Would you go back to 1903 to see Richard Peasre beat the Wright Brothers?
A 1930's air pageant?
One of the wartime stations?
The first airshow you went to? ____________________________
You can give three examples of where you'd travel back to.

No. 1) I'd like to spend a day at Wigram in about 1941 to observe and photograph our RNZAF then, to see the training in action of Oxfords, Gordons, etc
No. 2) A day at Whenuapai in 1941 - Vincents, Vildebeests, Hudsons, I'd be in heaven.
No. 3) A day at Ardmore in 1944, P-40's, Corsairs, Dauntless and my Grandad's farm across the road, whih I'd have to visit!
Of course if I had a time machine I'd probably go back to 1937 and stay there till 1945 before bothering to come back.

Actually I concur with Dave's desire there....maybe also a day watching first jet-fighters (Vampires?) being pressed into service, replacing the P-51's

1. Christchurch Airport in 1953 to see all the aircraft arriving in the London to Christchurch air-race. Of course, I believe the weather was crappy on the day, but if we're using time travel technology then surely we can change the weather too! ;D 2. Ardmore in 1944-45 would be on the list too, again to see the Kittyhawks and Corsairs in action. I also go and have a beer with my Dad, although he probably wouldn't know me because I wasn't born until 1967! 3. This is a tie between Wigram when the TAF-tangs were in action or Wellington Airport Opening Day. Plenty of action on the day at Wellington, and the camera would defintely be running when the Sunderland and Vulcan came into do their thing!

I thought I'd bring this old topic back up to the top now that we have more members. Anyone else got somewhere they want to step back in time to, aviation-wise?

Watch Captain Musick land on the Waitemata Harbour. A visit to wartime Ardmore would also be on the list.

- An exercise (I have just read about in my recent find) where the Otago TAF Mustangs were based at Woodburn along with Harvards as the aggressors in an "attack" on Ohakea with Mosquitos flying top cover and Vampires low down to protect the base, to witness mock dogfights with P-51s vs. Mosquitos and Vampires vs. P-51s would be a sight to behold. -The opening of Wellington airport, it would be easier to list what wasn't there.

Good one ok...my choice would be
1. Whenuapai the day the first Hudsons departed to the islands at dawn 2. Tour the TeRapa stores dept in 1944 3. Seagrove air station when the US marines arrived with their dauntless dive bombers

Great choices Hairy. I believe that opening was all filmed, so we can at least see something of it today.
Steve - a tour of the stores would only be good if you took a shopping basket (big enough for a Corsair or two). You could ask them why they had ordered Spitfire camera mounts (a load of them were discovered in deep storage since the war in the 1990's when the place was shutting down!)

1) A trip on the Short Empire boat to/from Australia
2) The Ardmore air show in 1946 when the RNZAF Meteor made its first public appearance
3) Auckland Aero Club inaugural pageant Mangere 1930

Nice suggestions there Peter, especially the Empire flight.

I agree about the Empire Flight - my trip would be to stow away on a Coral Route Solent flight in the 1950s - sheer class. If I could take a shopping basket, it would be a visit to Rukuhia in the late1940s to pick up some surplus Corsairs, P40s or Venturas! I would have also loved to attend the 1950s Harewood Air Pagents I have been looking at on old movie footage - lots and lots of round engines on classy propliners!

1. 1966 auckland air pageant - to see the two f-4 phantoms, mirages etc
2. the opening of wellington airport - especially to see the vulcan bomber try to land (unsucessfully) and the sunderland flying boat hit the deck
3.whenuapai open day 2001 not so much for the camera side but to see the last public airshow of the skyhawks and air macchi's, (not to mention the two f-111's)

The Vulcan wasn't landing; it was a 'touch and go', and he touched, and went!
[as did a Sunderland!]

not according to the film I've got, they did several touch and go's. but one attempted to land, he had to land on the extremity's of the runway to make it ,but he clipped a bank damaging his landing gear ( and just about putting his wing into the ground)

1, yes a flight on a solent on the coral route, plus it breaks down and takes months to get new parts. It would have to be a flight where they were talking all the contestants for Miss NZ on tour as well........
2, The first landing of concorde here at Mangere
3, anywhere where there were lots of merlin powered aircraft flying around doing low flypasts making that brilliant roar.

I taped the concord at mangere ...it was parked up and had lots of VIPs playing around ...was interesting watching the lowering of the nose cone....the coral route for a naughty week must have been exciting...excellent display at motat2 of that route...and the air hotesses etc....talk about flight attendents...We have had a korean flight attendent staying with me all this year and has busted up with her hubbie (747 pilot) any takers out there to date her ...very pretty late 30s nice lady?

How about a slight twist on the "shopping basket" idea during your one day in the past..... Go back to Rukihia in the late '40s when it was full of P-40s, PV-1s and Corsairs etc. and take a current Hamilton phone book with you and a copy of Classic wings (or trade-a-plane etc). Once you have arrived cross-reference your 2006 phone book with a period one and see which local farmer(s) are in both. Then go see said farmer and use the rest of your day convincing him that you really are from the future and show him how much the "old airplanes down the road" are worth now (using the Classic wings)and how obtaining a few and holding on to them to sell in the future would be a cracking idea. And since it was such a good idea all you are wanting in exchange is say..........a ventura?............. that you will pick-up a bit later on...........................
