New Chief of Defence reflects on World War I tragediesBy: John MacDonald, | New Zealand News | Friday January 31 2014 19:04 The new Chief of Defence says the tragedies of World War I should never be allowed to happen again. Lieutenant General Tim Keating was appointed into the Defence Force's top job in a ceremony in Wellington today. Speaking at Government House, he says it's right in this centenary year of the Great War to recognise the false belief that the ANZAC spirit could conquer anything. "The myth of ANZAC invincibility has been dismissed and over the next five years we'll reflect on World War I, where thousands of young New Zealanders died in the cause of international peace." The new defence chief used his first speech to remind the Government on the importance of investing in the armed forces. Lieutenant General Keating spoke on the dangers that young service men and woman face when serving their country. He says a trained Defence Force doesn't magically appear when conflicts arise. "Competence in our profession, the profession of arms, comes from the appropriate investment in people, equipment and training, and preparation for a conflict that may not even be manifest at the time." The new defence chief used his first speech to remind the Government on the importance of investing in the armed forces. ........... He says a trained Defence Force doesn't magically appear when conflicts arise. "Competence in our profession, the profession of arms, comes from the appropriate investment in people, equipment and training, and preparation for a conflict that may not even be manifest at the time." Lt. Gen. Keating makes three very good points there..........but is anyone in the Beehive actually listening??? But I am 'bitterly disappointed' he didn't take the opportunity to blame the English for everything bad that happened to the ANZACs in WWI..... Lt. Gen. Keating also makes the bold statement that "the tragedies of World War I should never be allowed to happen again". I totally agree, they shouldn't happen; but I have no doubt that they will happen again - human nature being what it is...... Anyway, strap yourself in for the next five years, as the centennary of WWI is bound to be interesting in many ways as all sides of the political/social/historical spectrum try to make milege out of one of the biggest tragedies of the 20th century. And keep an eye out for all the tacky souvenirs that make an appearance between 2014 and 2018 - they've already begun making an appearance in Belgium and France. Personally, I just can't wait to get myself a Gallipoli stubbie holder!
