"A pilot has been seriously injured in a light aircraft crash south of Hamilton. Police, ambulance and firefighters are at the scene of the crash which happened about 6pm on Wednesday in paddocks at Te Awamutu, about 30km south of Hamilton. The sole occupant of the light aircraft has suffered serious injuries, a fire service spokesman told NZ Newswire. Two fire trucks are on the scene, but no fires have broken out. Details about how the aircraft crashed are not yet available." home.nzcity.co.nz/news/article.aspx?id=181635&fm=psp,tsf (Not Bruce, I hope).

Not me, but I know the person involved. One of my SAA guys and probably pretty well known in recreational aircraft circles. Will be checking out how he is today.

yeah, poor John. John Thomas is an ex - RAF fast jet instructor with over 100hrs total flying experience. According to my contacts the aeroplane was very low before the crash and the undercarriage appeared to be stuck in the down position. John was trying to stop before he crashed but even full reverse thrust couldnt prevent it plummeting into the ground. I hope the media dont get hold of this story....

I hope John is going to be ok, Bruce. That is an unfortunate chain of events and it just goes to show that no matter how experienced the pilot is it really just depends on what is left in front of you. A little like having a motorbike tyre blow-out... a big difference between a long straight road and twisties or a busy motorway. I think I can make out the Cessna on that chart also.

Maybe a few more than 100hrs total if he is an ex-RAF instructor? I hope he is on the mend poor chap.

Just read something from the pilot involved here.
Was having issues with engine after TO, went to land, hit wind share - hit the ground rather hard, the design of the turbulent proberly saved his life the undercarriage as it broke up around him.
Hoping for speedy recovery there.

Complete details on injuries not been mentioned as of yet - but FaceBooking from hospital bed at least.
Says going to have to wear back brace for a bit at least, and here's a quote to go forward on:
" I very lucky to come out of a engine failure after takeoff in a tricky area. I have a lot respect for that area in aviation. Keep in control. Even if you going down. "
