I see in the latest Classic Wings magazine that the former Russell Group Hawker Hurricane C-FDNI has been purchased by Pays Air Service of Scone, New South Wales. That will be a great addition to the scene there.

It'll be the first Hurricane resident in Australia since the RAAF scrapped their only example at the end of the war. Great news.

Hi ran into this Hurricane by chance. Is having its woodwork redone and some other general sheet metal as well. It is not being done by Pay in Scone but in the Hunter Valley.

Stayed in Scone with David and Mary Reid in September. While there had a sort of reunion with several people with whom we had a lot to do with over the years at conferences in both New Zealand and Australia. Dan and Toni Kennedy came up from Goulburn and were joined at dinner by Dianne, Ross and Anne Marie Pay. We were given a conducted tour of the Pay hangars, Warbirds and operational. Also shown the rebuilds of the Spitfire and Hurricane. Great to see Ross carrying on Col's tradition.

They have a Spitfire under rebuild? What mark is it? Is it ex-RAAF?

Dave S - what's the status of their (ex-RNZAF) P-40? The most recent photos I've seen of it are dated 2007.

Just a little update I have visited the Hurricane several times when and since it arrived. Below is a small article I wrote earlier and as of today it is still accurate
Hawker Hurricane C/N 60372, C-FDNL, Mk XII / IIB Serial No 5481 is receiving a freshen up in the hands of Matt Webber and the team at Luskintyre Aircraft Restoration . Pays air services in Scone has asked Luskintyre Aircraft Restoration to perform the wood and fabric work on the airframe. The aircraft has now had all the fabric removed and is in the throes of having work completed on some of the woodwork required. It was fascinating to see the internal structures and fittings of the Hurricane being exposed. The work currently being performed to restore the Jack McDonald Hawker Demon at Caboolture highlights the similarities between the construction methods utilized in the two types and despite the increased complexity of the Hurricane the historic lineage is obvious with the same tube and socket fuselage construction with bracing wires and wooden stringer / fabric covering. The Hurricane is receiving a refurbishment of the fabric and some woodwork prior to returning to Scone, there is no hard and fast completion date for all this work to be completed, like all aircraft work it will fly when its ready.
The Hurricane should be back at Scone within 3 months for completion and assembly. As stated above the aircraft is owned by a Scone resident and will be operated on his behalf by Pay's
Supermarine Spitfire IX MH 603 also continues to make good progress and the wings are nearing completion within months. The 2 seater Spitfire, MK IX BS548 conversion will be worked on once the single seater is completed and is a longer term project.
Pays also have a second Mustang acquired in South Australia P51D 45-11526 VH-FST, which Ross purchased largely because it has a second seat and is undergoing an engine and prop rebuild prior to coming to Scone.
So no stopping Ross Pay and his team Kind regards John

On the subject of the P40 - it is alive and well and flies occasionall especially at RAAF reunions and ANZAC Days Curtiss Kittyhawk P40E VH-KTY is the second P40 to be included in the collection. The first was P-40E Kittyhawk Mk. 1a VH-KTH, now in the USA with James Smith. P40E VH-KTY was first flown in 2006 and has a service history with the RNZAF as NZ3094, however it is finished in the RAAF 3 Sqn Colors of Bobby Gibbes CV-C ET953. It was in fact, signed By Bobby Gibbes just before his death in 2007. The aircraft is in immaculate airworthy condition and on the day of my visit was undergoing minor engine maintenance in the display hangar. This aircraft was fully restored at Scone by the Pay’s staff and bears testament to the exceptional standard of their workmanship.
