We are facing a dilemma as Qantas are tightening up and have sold off two of their five Dash 8 200s. This was always gong to happen as we all know aeroplanes run out of time and get scrapped. Solution what can fly 1,300 klms land on a 1 klm strip and carry a decent load? Lord Howe Island is only 700klms from Sydney but our alternate is Port Macquarie another 500klms. So whatever comes here must must be able to take a load of fuel to make the alternate with reserves! Here is some old pic's of various Dash 8's from my collection of slides. An Ansett Air New Zealand Dash 8 200, obviously they can land here but not with a load of passengers and enough fuel to make an alternate. An Australian Customs Dash 8 with all sorts of gismos hanging off it. We saw this livery on one machine for around a month from memory, poor shot sorry. The first livery of Dash 8 100s were operated by a company called Eastern Australia Airlines.

I'd be surprised if these were scrapped; Dash 8s are highly sought after on the world market. Does depend on what condition they are in, but I know of other aircraft types that have operated in far harsher climates than Australia and these are being rebuilt from the ground up with every passing C check! Nice pics.
