Claiming relatives in 2NZEF

Hi there, I have encountered an odd concept in the course of my daily duties at NZDF Archives and Ive never heard of it before. I was wondering if anybody else can shed some light on it.

A veteran of North Africa has said that when his younger brother arrived at Maadi from New Zealand that he was able to "claim" him as a brother and have him granted a preferential posting to the same battalion. He has indicated that this was not an isolated occurrance. Has anyone heard of this "claiming"?

Yes, I have certainly heard this term used in the past, I think a veteran I interviewed must have mentioned it at some stage, but I don't really know a lot about it.
