This week, on the 26th of February to be exact, we mark the first year that this forum has been in existence. I created it on the 26th of Feb 2005 on a bit of a whim when I realised that I could make a forum for free, and there was a gap on the web which needed filling.
In that time over the past year, to date as I write, we have gained 88 members, had nearly 4,800 posts and over 450 topics have been discussed. We also seem to still have dozens of 'lurkers'who read but don't join up - to them I say please join us, don't be shy. If you find these boards interesting, you're in the right place. Make yourselves known.
This year on the forum has been remarkably better than I ever imagined when I created it, and so I want to thank all of you who have contributed over the past year to making this the success it is.
As far as I am aware this is the only disscussion forum on the web dedicated specifically to New Zealand aviation. So I hope in time the membership will grow further and the discussion and debate will grow richer for it. Keep spreading the word about the forum. And keep the ideas flowing in - the forum has enlarged and evolved as time has gone by, and I'm always willing to hear new ideas for improving it.
I also want to say how impressed I have been with the behaviour of members here over the year. I have tried to give the freedom so that people can speak their minds if need be (especially politically), and this has worked well because we've not had one single rip-roaring argument or the personal attacks that plague other forums across the web. We all seem to be reasonably like-minded, and equally air-minded.
Everyone has behaved very well here. The only two times I have ever felt the need to moderate posts (apart from my own !)were in the ATC board where our younger members were not thinking too clearly before typing, but there was nothing malicious or nasty in these - so overall the forum dynamics are fantastic.
What's even better is we have almost all been assisted in our own interests and projects by people who kindly share their information. And many of us have assisted other members and answered those long-nagging questions for them. That is what it's all about. A free exchange of knowledge and opinions, whether the subject is aviation history, modelling, current warbirds, politics, RNZAF today or whatever. This is something we never had before in this form, so we as Kiwis should all be proud of what the forum and what we as a group have achieved.
So, happy 1st birthday to the forum and a huge thanks to all members! Keep up the great work.
