While in Melbourne for the Centenary of Military Aviation Airshow, I was able to spend quite a bit of time in the restoration hangar, as well as zip through the Museum proper after the flying finished on the Saturday. The Museum holds regular interactive flying displays, featuring one of their airworthy aircraft. www.airforce.gov.au/raafmuseum/exhibitions/inter_display.htmwww.flickr.com/photos/errolgc/sets/72157644291016725/The restoration hangar was nicely set up to show the Mosquito project, and the trio of early Replicas (only the Boxkite is a flyer). The Mossie is under tension to correct a twist. I was there last Sunday Afternoon. (and lucky). I knew you had to provide a photo ID and the NZ Drivers Licence now does NOT qualify, so you need to take your Passport. The lucky bit was I was with someone who is a kiwi with a Victoria Drivers Licence. I suppose having a car with WA number plates didn't help either.
The main two hangars are quite good displays and information. The Restoration hangar was only open from an upper viewing area. At the far end, the RE8 and SE5A were parked up. Then there was another hangar to the south with a variety of warbirds. From the upper only viewing area, most could be photographed. Futher south again, another hangar with strike aircraft and a small viewing area at one end and the F111 and F4 were there.
Worth a visit, they display an aircraft three days a week and Sunday, was the Winjeel, so that was good and it's all free.

Yes, it's an active base and what they do there, I wouldn't know as it's previous activities were transferred to East Sale and Tamworh, the BAe Flying School). It would have been interesting to see the World War One buildings further to the south, or where the C130B is parked.

Not sure exactly but my money is on one of three. A3816 in which Sandy and Hughes shot down Albatros D5390/17 but were killed in the combat and the aircraft continued to fly till it ran out of fuel - D5390/17 in Australian War Memorial. A3661 which together with a second RE.8 were involved in the combat with Richtofen's Dr.1s that eventually precipitated the Red Baron's death. A4397 (this my real bet) that amassed the record for greatest total number of hours for British Forces on the Western Front by accumulating 440hrs in 147 flights over the front.

Some R.E.8 photos from the Museum's FB - great that it will be appearing on the Interactives schedule in due course. It's VH-OTF (Over The Front) And Ando was right, it's marked as A4397.
