Back in WWII when New Zealand hosted a US Marine Division and several US Navy units, etc., I assume those units must have performed field training exercises such as mock landings and battles. So if this is the case, did the USMC or US Navy (or USAAF) ever bring any light aircraft with them to New Zealand to act as liaison, artillery spotting platforms, or simply to observe movements during training? Did they ever bring any Grasshoppers or Sentinels and that sort of aircraft to New Zealand in World War Two?

Dave H, Answer to your question is "Yes". In the Ardmore history it is recorded that a (small number of?) Taylor Cubs were operating from there in March 1944. Here is the complete entry:
9/3/44; American Army Corps unit attached to 43rd Division given permission to operate Taylor Cub artillery co-operation aircraft from this station. Aircraft being assembled on area allotted to them north of equipment hangar.
I have also seen a statement in AHSNZ Jounrnal to effect that the writer had witnessed a formation of American light aircraft flying in formation over Auckland in 1944, although no number is mentioned.
