Dog log yarn a storm in a Tiny teacup

A dog rescued by the New Zealand Navy after it was found floating on a log off Great Barrier Island was not washed away in a storm, his owner says.
Crew from the inshore patrol vessel HMNZS Hawea used an inflatable to rescue the dog on Smokehouse Bay on Thursday.
The distressed animal was spotted on the log as crew were navigating through logs and other flotsam generated by the storm earlier in the week.
The dog's owner Ben Ngawaka, 20, said he had taken his boat out from his home on Rangiahua Island home to do some shopping at the nearest store at Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier with his dog on Thursday.
He stopped to examine a floating log he thought might be useful for building repairs, Mr Ngawaka told the Herald on Sunday.
"I had a little look for [Tiny] when I got to Fitzroy and couldn't find him. I realised, 'oh, my dog must have got off on that log'.
"He must have thought that when we stopped, we were parking on the shore and jumped off."
Mr Ngawaka told the paper he knew Tiny would stay put and he wasn't concerned.
He returned a few hours later after doing his shopping to find the Navy boat with Tiny and the crew gave him his dog.
Tiny had recovered with a feed and a long sleep.
"He's fine, he's most probably forgotten the whole thing by now," Mr Ngawaka said.
HMNZS Hawea's commanding officer, Lieutenant Anthony Norris, said it was an unusual and unexpected sight.
"There was significant debris in the water and on one large log floating in the water was this poor helpless dog," he said.
The story has gained international attention, picked up by Britain's Daily Mail, Fox News in the United States and media in Australia.
