On the subject of the kiwis on the Texans. But the more interesting kiwis are the ones in the roundels... they certainly aren't the correct RNZAF roundel kiwis. From photos I have seen, and taken, they appear to be a somewhat unique kiwi from anything that has gone before. The RNZAF have got the kiwi wrong in their "AIR FORCE' logo, and they have it wrong on their website, so I suspect that they may have now also put that same, wrong, kiwi on the Texans too. I believe the kiwis could accurately be classified as another 'first of type' in New Zealand skies! Hmmmm... A review of the 2011 'Air Force Brand Guidelines' informs us that the RNZAF Roundel underwent a subtle 'redesign' to bring it more up-to-date that was signed off and adopted in 2010. Looks like the Texan and the logo have got it right... ..."The kiwi has been refined to look less like a penguin with a streamlined head, longer curved beak, and straighter legs. The result is a silhouette that clearly resembles a kiwi while still retaining the original shape and feel."The Roundel: And the Logo:

The sad situation is that there is no longer an advisor to air staff on colours and markings!. Along with Cliff, I provided guidance on what should be used until I was retired in 2000. Since then it seems to have been a 'free-for-all' without any reference to history or heritage. e.g. selection of serials numbers et al

I'd guess the people who confuse a kiwi with a penguin are the same ones who confuse the NZ flag with the Australian one!. Anyway ,penguin are much saltier and chewier than Kiwi....

I think it looks more like a kiwi, longer beak etc I am also sure from my days of painting then that the front leg wasn't actually joined to the body

As an aside, if this new kiwi has existed as the standard since 2011, haven't we had a raft of new helicopters arriving since then - all adorned incorrectly with the 'old' roundel? Looks a bit like a penguin...! (perhaps the low viz version hasn't been updated..?)

A No. 1 (BR) Squadron Ventura wore a penguin as nose art, maybe it was the first kiwi roundel after all?

This is the proper, correct shape of the pre-2010 kiwi, as taken from the Devon '05 at Omaka by Marty Nicoll.

Actually a quick colouring in exercise and suddenly the penguin analogy becomes more clear.

Perhaps it can be adopted for use on our aircraft when they head to The Ice?
Anyway! More talk about the T-6s! Any rumours about the aerobatic team name and organisation? The Black Penguins?
