I was out at the Aero Club at around 3pm when an A320 landed on 36R then backtracked to the apron. About 2 minutes later a 737-300 landed as well. Apparently they had been holding above Auckland waiting for the weather to improve and had run low on fuel so diverted to get some more. An hour later and with topped up tanks they left for Auckland. I snapped a couple of photos on my phone, I apologise for the poor quality. I wonder if this might be the last time we see a 737 in Air NZ livery at Hamilton?

With the huge amount of our rates that went into extending the runways and upgrading that airport we should be getting more of these big airliners in there daily, rather than just being a flying school airfield.

Meanwhile the airline flights from Hamilton to anywhere remain some of the most expensive in NZ. What a waste of money that investment in the airport was.

A memorial to the over-inflated egos and delusional pipe-dreams of assorted local body politicians.
Ruination of what was a perfectly good GA airfield.
The only place that has done it worse is Palmerston North.

But we had Boeing 737's flying in and out of Hamilton on the domestic routes long before the collective councils came up with the idea of making it international. NAC and then Air New Zealand Boeing 737's used to fly in and out all the time, we could hear them taking off from Cambridge. Now we only get the turbo props, saves/makes money I guess.

Perfect example of why the "if you build it they will come" mentality does not work.

Unfortunately, "if you build it, they will come" only works when there's something to come to visit. Hamiltron and the local vicinity is so close to AKL that unless you have a specific and compelling reason...you'll fly into AKL purely on the basis of cost.
