As a boy barely in his teens, the younger man had befriended the New Zealanders while interpreting for them; and they had kitted him out in their uniform - complete with three stripes (Word Pictures)

16.06 HE TOHU MAUMAHARA On Thursday 2nd May 1940 the former luxury liner, Aquatania, departed Wellington with a convoy of reinforcements for the allied forces. Among them were the men of the 28th Maori Battalion. This programme follows their journey to war (RNZ)
