I dunno if this is the correct forum here, but what has happened to that Mig-21 that was brought into NZ with the view of making it flyable ? There was a big deal made about it on the news at the time. I remember sitting in it about 8-9 years ago in Christchurch while it was on display. I would think it would be a mammoth task to get one of those into the air www.kiwiaircraftimages.com/mig21.htmlTNZ

It is currently at Ardmore, complete, but as to airworthiness, I don't think there was ever any progress there. It is sitting outside, quite easily accessible, as I see it quite a bit when I drive past on the way to my stepfather-to-be's hangar (he owns the red Staggerwing Alpha Mike Uniform).

Still looks in very good condition, I had heard that it may be restored to at least taxi-able condition in the near future. If it ever reaches airworthiness, it would have to be the highest performance aircraft based in NZ...EVER!

Thanks guys.
It certainly is a beast !! I for one would love to see it fly, certainly would be a spectacle, and a potential deafener !!!!
BTW (That Staggerwing is a beauty !!!)
Cheers TNZ

I have been told by a couple of people within the Ardmore Warbirds community that the Mig 21 will NEVER fly. It is apparently a wreck on the inside. I think the airframe is not true or something like that. Basicly, it's a gate guard.
However, I am happy to be corrected. Hairy will no doubt know more.

Isn't it an ex-Czechosloviakian machine ?
I remember hearing that but maybe wrong.

When I first saw the Mig roadshow there was a 2 seater Mig 21UTI there as well - any ideas where that one went to?

Yeah, she's beautiful alright. There were two (including this one) at the Masterton Airshow earlier this year. Perhaps Talon can tell us what it's like to fly in one TNZ

When I first saw the Mig roadshow there was a 2 seater Mig 21UTI there as well - any ideas where that one went to? The two seater Mig-21 is in Gerald Rhodes "museum" in Wanaka painted in tiger colours. The -21 out at Ardmore is indeed in very nasty condition, and more power to anyone who wants to do anything with her its a pity to see what was once a magnificent machine rotting away. Anyone who wants to operate a -21 must be nuts (Dave-remember what Setter was saying when he was over here) but apparently there is another one in the country stashed somewhere that is a much better proposition for flying. An interesting footnote on the Ardmore -21 is that it still has its twin cannon package attached externally under the belly.

That's right, Marcus, I'd forgotten that. Setter did make some interesting comments. Where is Setter? Haven't seen him here for ages.
Personally I don't know what anyone sees in these old Mig jets, they're very ugly and very boring. Restore something nicer, like an RNZAF "V" bomber...
... Vincent... Vildebeest... Ventura... Vampire...Venom?

Who mentioned Vulcans? They're as boring as Migs. ;D
I want a real V bomber! One that saw a bit of action!

Yes, one action as I understand it. Still, very boing.
Let's start our own Lottery funded VTTS - Vildebeest To The Sky! ;D
Getting back to the Mig 21, I have a cutting from a newspaper somewhere from the early 1990's when one of these arrived here (or it may have been a Mig 17, not sure). The article, from memory, said the guy was restoring it to fly in the shed in his back yeard. Is this the same Mig as at Ardmore?
Is there still a Mig 15 at Wanaka?

I guess the significance of the Vulcan is that it didnt see Combat service (apart from the series - 6 ops - of Black buck raids to the Falklands) If it did most of Europe would be glow-in-the-dark still. (The Cold war was definitely a real war) The V bombers were nuclear bombers essentially designed to destroy civilisation as we know it - But such an elegant design to do it with.... re the Migs, I understand that more than the original two -21s were imported, so there probably is another one or two out there somewhere. If they ever fly again theyd have to be sponsored by someone with LOTS of cash - I'd imagine theres a slot in the cockpit to feed $100.00 notes into the afterburner!
