What are the little planes hanging up in Motat? And what's their history? Are they both homebuilts?

Yes they are both homebuilts, the red one is a Gere Sport Biplane which is a local derivation of 1930s Lincoln Sports plans, built either late 1930s or early 1960s, (I've forgotten which), I'm not sure on the other one. MoTaT has a really good collection of Early Homebuilts, they also have a Flying Flea and have just completed a replica of a Lincoln Tui - another, more famous variant of the Lincoln that was but in Dannevirke but mainly flown from Mangere. The Tui is one of the most beautiful Biplanes ever built, and among those who flew it was Charles Kingsford Smith (who loved it...) With the Wealth of homebuilt history in the collection, I am personally negotiating Motat bringing the Flea and Tui to the SportAvex Airshow in Tauranga next year, howver please note that this is still to be confrmed.

Thanks for identifying the Gere.
Wow, a Tui, am I right in thinking that this is the little biplane parked under the Vilebeest in a famous photo? It was indeed cool. Is this replica to be flayable (probably a dumb question being Motat). I didn't know they were still building any replica planes.

Whoops, I meant Vildebeest, but rather than change it I'll leave my typo for your amusement. I know you'll like it Bruce, hehe

Ah wait, I might be wrong - I was referring to a photo that appears in RNZAF - The First Decade, page 16. The baby plane under the Vilde is a Tui Sport, with owner Fred North.
PM me the time and place for your meeting and I'll see if I can make it.

Yes, the Tui is the "Tui Sport" built by Fred North. As a basis for its construction he used the Tui Sports plans, but in true DIY Kiwi fashion he redrew it to make the Tui. Here a a couple of pics from the Summer 2004 edition of "Sport Flying". Unfortunately Motats machine is non flying (but built to proper aircraft practice, unlike the Fairey Swordfish) I would love to see something like this flying. There is another Licoln sports in existence in NZ, ZK-BWV (I think) is closer to the original plan but still deviates somewhat. This aircraft was flying in the late 1980s based out of Te Kowhai with Rob McNair. It was the oldest airworthy NZ homebuilt at the time, but it hasnt been seen for over a decade - does anyone know where it is? I'll try the PM thingy - not sure if I've got it set up - will post details for anyone else to see if interested.
