Hey guys, I have checked into the persistent rumours going around about Tauranga not having an airshow next year and apparently this is nonsense. I asked one of the longtime organisers and she assures me there will be an airshow. So watch this space. From the Classic Flyers Web site www.classicflyersnz.com/AirshowTHE AIRSHOW IS COMING IN JANUARY 2016 Tauranga is the place to be when the Tauranga City Air Show fills the skies over the city’s airport again, providing a dynamic event for both Bay of Plenty citizens and visitors alike. Organisers of the “Classics of the Sky”- (Tauranga City Airshow) are excited about a new format for the coming events in 2016. There will now be two afternoon “mini airshows”, one in summer and one in autumn. Described as “family picnic type events”, the airshows are scheduled for mid-afternoon to evening, with static and flying aviation displays, food stalls and children’s entertainment. Air displays will start in the late afternoon and continue until evening. Organisers have successfully run larger 2 day air-shows every two years since 2010, however it is felt that it is now time to try something different. Saturday, January 23rd along with Saturday March 19th are the two show dates set for 2016. Each airshow will have a specific aviation theme. The themes for 2016 have not yet been announced as organisers are waiting to confirm participating aircraft. There will be a mix of classic aircraft, sports aircraft, military aircraft & gliders, along with local NZ Police teams & other displays. Each airshow will have an associated event or special attraction – in January this will include the Mount Truck Show. Previously held at Baypark, the Mount Truck Show organisers were looking for a venue with more space for more trucks, at the same time as the Classics of the Sky organisers were looking for an event to combine with the airshow, so the merging of intentions seemed appropriate and plans are well under way to provide the dual event for the local community. My Comment from 11 May post at 7:15pm; "It now seems likely Tauranga will not have a full 2/3 day Airshow next year but possibly some more regular smaller events." Hmm sounds very similar to me!!!!

Your post was not the only source of the rumour, Ray. All sorts has been circulating, to the point where even I was beginning to believe it.

On Facebook they said this was a "once in a lifetime" occasion....for those born after 1992, maybe?

The 109 that was briefly here in 1996 was built up by Eria, Leipzig-Thekia, from wings of airworthy CASA HA-1112 M1L Buchon C4K-40 D-FEHD, fuselage from a Czech-built Bf-109G-10 c/n 151951 & a DB605D-1 engine. F/f 23Mar95. It represented a Bf-109G-10, and was registered as ZK-CIX/2 from 20th March 1996 to the 12th April. Following that visit, it returned to Germany as D-FDME

Very few parts came from 151951, the fuselage was for all intents and purposes Buchon C4K-40. Shots of the relatively intact G-10 banded about at the time of the conversion were taken in the fifties apparently. Still it was great to hear the whistle of the DB at WOW 1996

Somewhere I've seen a picture as D-FEHD as a pure Buchon - possibly being used for filming in the UK in the late 1980s? - so I was under the impression it was built by Hispano and was a Buchon until the early-mid-90s. EDIT: It was over for Memphis Belle, and looked like this: flic.kr/p/nfWZWF . I definitely disagree with the idea it was built by Erla, although the G-10 parts may have been.

Evening D-FEHD appeared twice in the UK for filming whilst still a Buchon; 1988 for the TV series Piece of Cake and 1989 for the film Memphis Belle, she also made some UK airshow appearances at the time. After 1990 (I think) she didn't return until again until 1995 by which time she'd morphed into the Bf109G-10 seen at Wanaka. Seen below in May 1988 at the Fighter Meet airshow in Piece of Cake colours. Now in Memphis Belle colours, Duxford's Classic Fighter display June 1989. Apologies for photo quality, just a quick scan and dust spot removal of old negatives done tonight for this post. Neil

Four Airforces at Warbird Over Wanaka 2016Wednesday, 16 December 2015, 11:24 am Press Release: Warbirds Over Wanaka French crew and CASA 2014 16th December 2015 Media Release – Four Airforces Wanaka: A record four air forces will attend next Easter’s Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow. Organisers have confirmed the Royal New Zealand Airforce will be joined by aircraft and crews from the United States Airforce, Royal Australian Airforce and French Airforce. Airshow General Manager Ed Taylor says over the years various regional airforces have supported the event but this is the first time there will be four taking part in the flying display at the one airshow. It was confirmed recently that the US Air Force is bringing a C-17 Globemaster III to Wanaka next Easter. This will be the first time a USAF aircraft has been part of the flying display at Wanaka. They have now been joined by the Australians and French. The French Air Force debuted at Wanaka at the 2014 airshow when they had a CASA transport aircraft on static display. “This time the CASA will put on a flying display on both days of the airshow showing off its capabilities – this is another first,” says Ed. “The Australians have confirmed their participation next Easter and at this stage are looking to bring back their Hawk Jets to perform after a very popular debut at the 2014 airshow. Last time the Australians had three Hawks here but only two could perform after a mechanical fault kept the third one grounded. Hopefully they will get all three into the air this time.” “These aircraft are fast and noisy and put on a great display of the pilot’s skills.” Meanwhile, the RNZAF has announced the first visit to Warbirds Over Wanaka by the new Texan aircraft which make up the airforce’s new display team – the Black Falcons. “The RNZAF has yet to get the team up to full display status. But we will get a good look at these aircraft with one on static display and a second Texan part of the flying display.” The RNZAF has also confirmed the Hercules will be involved in static and aerial displays, the Kiwi Blue skydive team will perform while the NH90 helicopters will be showing off capabilities and also be on static display. It’s also hoped the RNZAF will be part of the free lakeside event late on Good Friday afternoon. Ed has acknowledged the assistance of the RNZAF in helping secure the other airforces for Wanaka. The 2016 Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow is being held at Wanaka Airport on March 25th to 27th with the Rides Day on the 28th.
