I am surprised no-one has mentioned the fact that the NZDF has today been officially committed to join the coalition in the Middle East against the ISIS fighters.
An initial 106 troops are being sent to Iraq to train local soldiers. We already know that NZSAS are in country too as this was published over a week ago that an advanced party was there. It looks like it's war for NZ again.

What a stupid cartoon. It degrades the professionalism of the NZDF by depicting a slingshot and a pop-gun. It's not funny and it makes no real point. Nisbet must be a lefty, you know, the ones who have done their best to degrade our military and make them incapable of overseas deployments.

That cartoon , which I appreciate is meant to be a political statement, is a gross perversion of fact and as such is totally irrelevent.

Well said, "The Club" I.e. allies are the reason I've grown up speaking English in a free, democratic country.
The cartoon is worse than silly....

In 2001 the Mir space station finished its 15-year voyage in a shower of fireballs, its wreckage streaking through the atmosphere and plunging into the South Pacific. Ever since, there are people here in New Zealand, namely any leader of the Labour party right up to the present day, The Greens, and Peter Dunne who have found it impossible to return to the planet they originally came from. Had MIR been still extant, Winston Peters would no doubt have stood in an election on it. The facts on the Iraq deployment are really quite simple, and had those opposing the Government decision been the Government, they would have done precisely the same thing! Which just shows the hypocrisy that exists around the Beehive! Our going is tokenism, because nothing less than a million men on the ground will eliminate ISIS, but we can't sit down here in our green and pleasant land, and while also holding a seat on the UN Security Council, and do nothing! Ignoring ISIS will in the end be counter-productive because they are mindless mediaeval thugs who need to be eliminated from the planet. That will never be achieved by bombing alone. Hitler didn't surrender to a Lancaster flying overhead. Germany was taken by boots on the ground!

Well said Phil82. That summarises things in a nutshell.
Dave, I was aware and wanted to comment, but was worried about breaching forum rules on politics. I support our guys going to Iraq and am disappointed in the politics being played over the decision. The comparison with Australia and other countries is stark, but reflects how dysfunctional our parliament is.

Ditto to Phils comments - well said.
I too support our troops going to Iraq
I find it quite inetresting also that 100 years ago, our young men and Australia's young men, also went to the Middle East to prepare for Gallipoli
I think it's really cool that our "ANZAC" forces will again be togther - not to invade any one, but this time to help train troops to help stop an invader.
Bon Voyage and all the very best to our troops
Regards
Alan

Yes , as others have said , thats about it in a nutshell . Reminded me very much of a much older ( but equally relevant ) quote -- “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Let no one misunderstand me: I do not want any NZ serviceman to die in the shithole which is Iraq, with a government so corrupt it has swallowed millions of dollars of US aid, with virtually no indication of any consequence that anything good has been achieved. Saddam was an absolute bastard, but he controlled the intercine rivalry which billions of US dollars have failed to resolve. The only reason the SAS are there is to be prepared to shoot Iraqi renegades who have attacked occupation forces on a regular basis. Iraq cannot be trusted. So I don't want our young men to die there, but I really don't see any alternative to their not being there if NZ is to remain a credible voice on the world stage. In the UK, "Jihadi John" has been identified as the man who callously and deliberately beheaded people because his brain has been turned to mush by Islam. Muslim apologists in the UK, unbelievably, aare defending him as "A nice young man".This clown continued on to say that the reason this maniac is what he is is due to being hounded by the MI5. Unless the UK gear up to recognise the insidious infiltration of Islam into the British , and Western society generally, way of life then it is doomed. Do we really want that in NZ?

They are the NAZIs of this century, without any care or thought for anything beyond their tiny minds view of this world. A stand needs to be made. And if anyone is dumb enough to think that ISIS terrorist scum would refrain from harming a NZer because they are not part of action against them, is a delusional fool. They are the pure definition of crazed extremists. And to those who disagree I present you with muath-al-kassasbeh, an aircrew brother but also a Muslim RIP bro, we'll miss you.
