New Zealand now has an excellent world-class film industry, and we also have a great warbird movement with lots of lod military and historic aircraft. So...
If stories of New Zealanders in the wartime Air Forces, or perhaps other interesting aviation stories, were to be dramatised into feature films (or mini-series perhaps), what would you like to see? I'd love to see your suggestions.
My own ideas...
I'd like to see biopics on the lives and wartime careers of
Cobber Kain - featuring Sir Tim's actual 73 Sqn Hurricane of course. I hate to say this, even think it, but maybe Russell Crowe would be good in the role... (waiting for outcry)
Also a biopic of AVM Sir Keith Park - from his early WWI days in the Cavalry, to the RFC, to inter-war period and his rise to rank, and then the Battle of France (he was in charge of the air battle at Dunkirk), Battle of Britain of course, and Malta where he again helped to save the day. Not sure who I cast, perhaps John Bach for the older Park.
I'd love to make a picture about No. 3 GR Sqn in the Pacific when they first went to Guadalcanal - show all the living conditions and tribulations as well as the air combat. Perhaps based around a real crew, or maybe a fictional crew based on real events.
I'd also love to see a film about the Amiens prison raid which 487 Sqn had a very prominent role in.
And I'd love to also make a film about a new pilot recruit joining in WWII and going through his training and life in barracks, etc. There are lots of written true accounts to draw from, and it could be a great film if done right, and the characters are strong. It's a story all RNZAF airmen and airwomen could relate to, then or now I guess.
