Rumour has it that the Air Freight NZ Convairs are going to retire. Anybody know when or what they will be replaced with? Apparently they were given the enoughs enough by CAA. Can't see why. There are older aircraft than that flying around...Be interesting to see what they replace them with that will have similar cruise speeds and freight capacity.

I wonder if any thought has been given to replacing them with transport versions of whatever the air force gets for a small tactical airlifter eg. a c-295. This could bolster the number of these aircraft in the country, making it more economical to support, with both civil & military benefiting from the larger scale of operation. To some extent the Convairs 580s are sort of doing this now - having similar engines to the Hercules & Orions. I can't see Treasury supporting it, but the government could lead an incentive scheme that would encourage the small freight operators to migrate to a common type. It could open options as some sort of reserve force for times of national disaster. Civil pilots maybe required to do a couple of weekends of tactical air training a year? I'm thinking of something that would kind of sit halfway between the American Air National Guard and their Civilian Reserve Air Fleet.

My thoughts are that it's due to the new PBN requirement that is being rolled out. Some operators are adding new avionics and others new aircraft......

Old Age?,most of these are 60+ years old. Trouble is most of the aircraft designed to replace these DC-3 era twin engine types have already been retired themselves.

Of course the DC-3 is the reason there are no replacements,because they were manufactured in such huge numbers and then sold onto the open market at such cheap prices nothing has ever been able to replace them.

I can remember that back in the 1950/60s, the cry of the day was "we need a DC-3 replacement, and thing like the F-27, the Avro 748, and many others, I suppose the Convairs were another. On the military side I suppose the C-130 is the DC-3/C-47 of the last 50 years or so. isc

If you have a look at when the Convair (and DC4 and a few others) were designed, you'll see they were a DC3 replacement- but designed to operate off sealed runways which the DC3 was not.
They carried more further, faster, higher and more comfortably than a DC3 could.
However, without the demand of wartime there were also fewer of each 'replacement' model made and the DC3 remained as the cheap option for many years. There was no real reason to build a DC3 sized aircraft as there were so many around.

beagle (and others): Do you have any idea as to what the economics of the C-130H vis a vis the CV380's would be(Serious question)? I would have thought that by the time the '380's are depreciated, they would be almost 'cost-less' to operate, and that the main reason they would be replaced would be high airframe hours rather than operating cost per se'.

ANZ sales person on ZB radio 2 days ago(I think), we will be reducing flights in/out Chch, ending long range ie Tokio. But there will be inceased seats on internal flights with the introduction of A-320 aircraft, to replace B-737. isc

The 580 being phased out has nothing to do with a CAA decision. It is simple economics with PBN taking over the country. Replacement airframe are going to be 737, front runner possibly ex jet connect aircraft.

Well the above mentioned 580's could almost be louder than a Boeing 737F? Wouldn't be much in it noise wise. They make some serious noise just taxiing. Almost on a par with the F-27...

And the 580 is slower than a B 737, so the noise hangs around a bit longer. isc
