The Chinook isn't pretty, but it's an awesome beast, function over form. The Seahawk is not so ugly as a Blackhawk I guess, but it ain't a thing of beauty either. But the Bell thing is quite nice looking, as far as helicopters go.

The Spartan's quite a sharp-looking number, isn't it?
Great shots Calum!

Out of curiousity (and concerning the lead photo 'Some of the locals' 5 December, 2015): Can anyone tell me why Bell 429 No. 050 (the one flying) appears to be carrying three different sets of ID / Rego marks? Its RAN serial seems to be N49-218; its 'place in unit' No. evidently being 050, yet it carries the civil Rego VH-POJ. Curiously, N49-048 (on the ground in the same photo), doesn't carry any similar markings.
As there are apparently only three of these helicopters currently in service with the RAN, is this an 'Oz' thing or just a very confused aircraft?
Thanks.

No worries, when I took these pictures Bell 429 SN 57218 was still on the Civil (VH) register, hence VH-POJ. It's Rego on the State register is going to be N49-218 (It finally made it onto the state register on the 16th Dec 15) . The RAN also have this stupid "side number" system, hence the 050. This is usually the aircraft call sign number (the call sign for this on is Medusa 050). This is now the 4th Bell 429 in service with the RAN. They are leased to the RAN, maintained by Raytheon Australia and flown by RAN aircrew. They use them for Aircrewman and AvWO training as well as pilot training post AS350 but prior to the pilots going onto Seahawk / MRH-90. Plus they do a whole lot of other things with the aircraft.

Great pic's thanks for sharing, the RAAF truly have transport covered these days. Don't they, Include the CH-47F and KC-30 and you've got airlift from whoa to go covered. I can't think of a similar sized air force with the capabilities the RAAF has.
