w 2644 Henry, M A Miss Mavis Aileen 420124 Hob, Depot as WA2 w 2539 Henry, M J Miss Mavis Jean 420124 When, Stn as WA2 Their births are registered just a year apart. As they enlisted on the same day and both in the Auckland area, I wonder if they might have been cousins? Errol

Yes, very north Waikato on the border with Auckland district. Possibly a longer drive from Cambridge than Whakatane actually. This does not mean of course that either of these Mavis's may have moved to Cambridge some time between 1938 and 1941.

Dave,
Maisie is a nickname for Margaret or Marjorie.
So it might be that W2785 Miss Maggie Henry is actually the girl who was at Cambridge at the time? Incidentally her parents were James & Luie Henry!
There's also W3275 Miss Marjorie Henry, but as she did not enlist until July 1942 would seem to be out of the time frame.

Hmm, I didn't know that about Maisie being a nickname for those two names. It's all a but confusing, haha. I think a visit to the museum might be in order to see if there was a write up in the paper about the farewell 'do' as it may well mention other family members.
She joined up, according to that NZ Observer piece, with another Cambridge girl, Lassie Hume. This has to be W2530 Hume, E G Miss Ernestine Graham 420124 When, Stn as WA2

I can see the reason to call one's self Lassie. it's either that or be called Ernie or Graham!! "I'm a Lassie!!"

Gosh it seems that Lassie Hume was made an MBE (Military Division) in 1961, and she served with the WAAF right through till 1963, retiring as a Flight officer.

The plot thickens! They must have moved to Cambridge together!!
As she was still known as Hume when she died I guess she may never have married, and the same for Mavis Jean Henry, still unmarried when she died. So not likely any children to ask about either of them.

Errol. Just been looking through your list, especially interested in the Cox names.Very interesting. Janet Edith Cox was my Aunt. Photo of her on page 33 of Bryan's book "Too Young To Die". Noeline Rosamond and Marion Daphne Blachford (see spelling) were cousins. Their photo is on page 32 in Bryan's book. The name Blachford is a family name. My Great Great Grandfather's second wife was Anna Blachford. That is where our line came from. My Grandfather was Edmund Blachford Cox. He lived in a house called "Mulgoa" in Hamilton Road in Cambridge. Photo of that house in Bryan's book page 3. My Mother was Marian Blachford and one of my sisters was Marjorie Blachford. Dave

Dave Thanks for that correction, Dave. The 'Blashford' error originated in RNZAF Routine Orders of the time. I've now corrected the listing. Errol

Hey Dave, was Margaret Emily Cox also in your family? There was a Margaret Cox in Cambridge. I have seen her name come up several times in newspaper searches, etc., who I took to be around he same generation as the other cousins. And now I see there was Margaret Emily Cox on the WAAF list, and wonder if this is the same girl?

Dave, I do not know Margaret, but most probably a family member. Unfortunately I do not know a lot of my relatives. A few years ago found out by a chance remark that a woman living in Warkworth whom I had known for at least 10 years through golf was a cousin. She was brought up in the Cambride area. Bryan rang last night. He sounds fit and well.

Hi, stumbled on this forum while researching my nana serving in WAAF, interested in photos of this time. She drove boats out to seaplanes in Auckland harbour at one stage. She is on the list: w 5183 Bull, C B Miss Constance Bette 430315 Wigram, Stn as WA1
Thanks. Abi Blanchett

Hi Abi, I'd suggest you might like to get in touch with Colin Armiger, who was in the RNZAF Marine Section and he runs their association. He's on 09 378 8023, or craakl@xtra.co.nz
I'm sure he'd enjoy helping you and he probably has photos. The Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram will also have photos, you can contact them on research@airforcemuseum.co.nz
Good luck!
