While I was down the West Coast in January of this year, someone told me of two mountaineers that observed a Cessna 172 flying through the Lendenfeld Saddle into the Whataroa River Valley on the day that ZK-CSS disappeared. The weather at the time was very misty with low cloud coming and going.
Can anyone add more to this?

ZK-CSS and the Turner Family featured on "The Missing" on TV last night night; for those who missed it here is a link to that episode: tvnz.co.nz/the-missing/video. I'm not sure how long it will remain current.
A search of the Whataroa River was featured; this flows from the Whymper Glacier which is where a piece of metal was found (Sighting Report #10).
Sighting Report #11 mentions Broderick Glacier - there is a Brodrick Peak directly above Whymper Glacier but also a Brodrick Pass much further South near the Haast River.

Nice work Gavin, sounds very plausible. In regards to the suitcase, if indeed it was from CSS and was still intact with everything perfectly folded, it would possible mean a light impact or separated on initial impact. The carb-icing sounds very likely in this scenario. The baggage would have been in the tail and ejected when the tail became separated.
In regards to the tartan dress though, if it is the same one she was wearing in the photo shown it doesn't seem to fit literally. She was 6 years old at the age of disappearance yet in the photo she could have been no more than 4 years old taking in to account how old her brother looks since he is 2 years younger than her. It would be great if the suitcase could be tracked down!

Thanks Nakiflyer.
Yes, I had already considered this although I would say that the girl was more likely even younger - about three years old when the photo was taken. The Tartan dress can easily be explained as either her parents had bought her another one, or more likely it was her favourite dress (kind of like a "cuddly") and wanted it with her even though it didn't fit her anymore.
If you have, or had, or may have a young daughter in the future, you will know what I mean. I have two daughters, although they are adults now.
