Hi all,
For those that have not heard, the NZ Aerobatic Club is running a Regional Aerobatic Competition, at Omaka over the 13th-15th November, later this year. We are being hosted by the Marlborough Aeroclub with support for the event from the Aviation Heritage Centre.
With this year being 70 years, since Curtis' little biplane, bearing his own name, first flew, and with celebrations taking place all over the world, not the least, nearly 70 examples of the type being at Oshkosh last month, I felt that we have to do something here in New Zealand.
The South Island Akrofest will add to the Brian Langley Trophy, at Northshore which will give us two regional events, followed by the Nationals in March.
This year, the highlight, will be the gathering of as many of this classic little biplane as possible, and the first aerobatic competition in the south island being held will form the foundation of the event in the future.
On behalf of the NZ Aerobatic Club, I would like to extend this invitation to all aviators and enthusiasts. No matter what you fly or what your involvement or interest is, I see this gathering as an excuse to get together and celebrate aviation, EAA style. No one knows how to do it better.
I am struggling to think of a better airfield to host such an event as Omaka with it's vibrant GA activity, as well as being a prominant home to several warbird collections.
Schedule:
13th: Arrivals, evening dinner @ Aeroclub.
14th:
0830: Briefing (Aerobatic entrants)
0930: Aerobatic box opens
1200: Aerobatic box closes
1500: Briefing (4minute free style competitors)
1600: Aerobatic Box open for duration of 4min free flights
1900: Dinner / Prizegiving
15th: Departures
We will have the visiting aerobatic aircraft, displayed along the fenceline outside the Aviation Heritage Centre and the Aerobatic Box, will be situated over the field, to the south west (see attachment).
The competition, looks to be rather short, and in short, it is. We are running the 2016 NZAC Recreational and Intermediate Knowns, along with the 4minute free in the afternoon. However, if we were to get interest from 2 or more pilots wishing to fly the 2016 Advanced Known, I am only too happy to accommodate this as well. Normally, each competitor would also fly a freestyle designed to the limitations of the rules and the category they are competing in, along with an unknown sequence which is allowed to be viewed prior to flight but not practiced. For simplicity, and to allow the day to flow better on this first year, I chose not to run the other components. Next year, the intention will be to run the full daily schedule.
We have 3 pieces of rather nice silverware up for grabs but apart from anything else, enjoyment is the priority, and probably not too many 9s issued this early in the new competition season!
I have designed a Ltd edition t-shirt to commemorate the weekend and will have photos/pricing on the options available as soon as I have them in my possession.
At this point, we should make it clear that this competition is open to all pilots and all types of aircraft. One more note about the competition, if you are competing in the 4min Free, you will need the appropriate LLDA endorsement. As Contest Director, I'll need to sight all medicals/Aeros BFRs/LLDAs before the briefing on Saturday morning. Also regarding the 4min Free, each competitor will need to select a song that will be played over the stereo system at the aeroclub, once the bar opens at around 4pm on the Saturday. If you register for this competition but don't indicate which song you want played, I will make sure I have a selection of some very suitable tracks to choose from.....
I have attached a layout of the aerobatic box (which will be partially marked), Registration Form and Dinner menu for both nights at the Aeroclub Bar. Can you please include which desert/main you would like as the Saturday night dinner will need to be pre-ordered.
If anyone has any further questions, or would like to forward this on to other Pitts owners, enthusiasts and pilots, please do as there will be many whose contact details I do not have!
Registration closes 1st November. So please print the form and return to me before this date.
Wishing the US Team the very best of luck at the Worlds in France.
