I have been advised that a Hawker Hunter T.7 crashed during a display at Shoreham yesterday (22 August 2015), with seven dead as a result. The cause would seem to have been a lack of height during a loop. Some of the membership may know the aircraft personally.
This link 'should' work , but if not, 'Google' Shoreham airshow crash.

Just terrible. There will be many videos (and stills) that will assist with the investigation. Certainly a lack of speed at the bottom and the flaps appear to be deployed... but we really know nothing. Time to sit and wait for official stuff. Condolences to many, and speedy recovery to many more.

Sky News, when reporting this incident at 7 am this morning had the headline as "WW2 Hawker Hunter crashes at airshow" The accompanying commentary was "The 1950's jet aircraft..." Mixing up Hurricanes with Hunters? Never the less a tragedy for all concerned.

Just read reports that say Pilot survived, but is in serious condition in hospital.
Some news organizations really need to do their research on Wikipedia more carefully, some are saying its a WW2 Jet.

Well this is the first time since 1952 Farnborough Airshow that there has been a fatality on the ground in the UK. Until we know what caused this accident lets hold off on any judgments. Crossing the road is dangerous and there are far more deaths from that than from an airshow each year.

Apart from the 10 people in the crowd killed at Reno in 2011 The reference to 1952 applies to the UK.

This is truly horrific for anyone to witness and for all those concerned.
I don't think it really matters if the media have initially referred to the Hunter as a WW2 jet, everyone has a very clear picture to what has occurred.

I noticed the pilot had started the loop very low - below the top of a close by hill, so it was always going to be marginal unless he pursued the vertical climb for a bit, but then that is dependent on the initial level airspeed to gain altitude. So many factors, so sad. Pilot I believe is still listed as critical.

Just don't read the comments on the daily fail piece. Someone at the Key Publishing Forum shared some, early on....I got quite angry and had to scroll past them. The ignorance of some when it comes to vintage fighter aircraft ("These old planes aren't built for stunts") is staggering. This morning stories on Stuff and the Herald say 11 confirmed dead and that the pilot is Andy Hill, ex-RAF and (current?) British Airways captain. How he got out of that I will never know. I don't know the name but the aircraft pops up regularly on the "North Weald Diary" thread at Key and seems well-known.
