A few years ago there was a big hoopla over the creation of the "Waikato Aviation Cluster" - a collection of about 30 Aviation businesses based in the Waikato. It was a big thing and was involved with the "Flair" Trade show at Te Kowhai and various oither joint ventures and startup schemes. It seems to have gone really quiet however - I guess the closures of several of the key players has affected it! The web page www.waikatoavaition.co.nz is now dead. Does anyone know what happened to it? does it still exist in any other form? I'm interested from a point of sponsorship for an aviation development activity I'm thinking of...

From a quick Google search it looks as though it was renamed the Aviation Industry Cluster in 2011. I found a press release from that time with contact details for their chair. I'll send that to you via PM, it may be worth a shot.

They burnt up all the government funding and that was the end of that, total spend was somewhere in the 1 to 10 million range I think. May be someone could find out the actual total spent for interest.
Doesn't matter how much money you throw at some thing if the company's leadership is poor it's never going to go anywhere (both former and existing company's fall under that discription).

It has always been known that you can make a small fortune in aviation - as long as you start with a big one.

Yes but the key detail is to use someone-else's large fortune.

Or, if you are really on to it, the taxpayers/ratepayers large fortune.

Has anybody seen this? Looks very professional..and Hamilton based.... linkLooks just like the Icon A5, without the amazing marketing.
Could be pretty tough going unless it has a bargain basement price.

Has anybody seen this? Looks very professional..and Hamilton based.... linkI know some of the guys who have worked on this in the past few years. The design is quite unconventional and I think they are now trying to raise more funding to finish it off. One of the biggest things is the undercarriage. In order not have it considered a retractable U/C design ( US insurance companies charge higher premiums for retracts) the wheels are semi-recessed in the boat hull. That way you don't have to worry about having the gear in the wrong place for touchdown either on water or land. The Icon A5 is the most similar competitor. I saw a prototype of that flying at Oshkosh in 2010 and they are just starting to deliver production aircraft now. The Wave will probably be at least that far again as the prototype isn't ready to fly just yet.

I am not sure of numbers built but there have been Fletchers, Crescos, Airtourers, Airtrainers, PAC750's, Alphas, and don't forget the late Max Clear's factory and also that factory north of Cambridge owned by Anton Meyer.

About 180 Fletchers,40 Cresco's,100 PAC 750's,100 Airtourer/Trainers.
(The first NZ made Fletcher was CRF in 1966,the previous 120 were US built.)
So thats about 420 aircraft.

There have been well over 155 Airtrainers alone built, without the Airtourers which numbered 80 built in NZ

300+ Bantams, 6 McNair Mynahs, Plus 2 AirTrucks, numerous homebuilts including One Avian Adventurer.. If you consider some of the "US Built" Fletchers to be Assembled in NZ thats over your 1000 total
