During World War II, the Lockheed developed a long-range version of its famous fighter P-38 Lightning, however, due to technical problems the project was canceled. The link below provides a collection of interesting photos of the plane and a question: If the plane had entered service, have reached the success of the P-38? What do you think? Visit the link, see the photos and answer this question through a poll at the end of the post. aviacaoemfloripa.blogspot.com.br/2011/03/lockheed-xp-58-chain-lightning.htmlBest Regards.

Got quite a bit of info on the XP-58 in a little book I'v had for over 50 years, it's vol 4 Fighters by William Green. I think it was one of those aircraft that them in the Pentagon couldn't make up their mind as to what they wanted it to do, the design started with two Continental IV-1440, then the P&W XH-2600 and a change to 2 seat the engine was discontinued, so they looked at the P&W R-2800 with turbo chargers, next idea was the Wright R-2160, rated2,350hp, and 2 rear turrets were added, then a pressure cabin, then they thought it might be a nice machine for low level as a tank destroyer, then high altitude was the thing, and a 75 mm gun with 20 rounds was fitted to break up bomber formations. The last engine was introduced in 1943, the turbo charged Allison V-3420 of 3,000 hp. It weighed 39,192lb all up. the proposed armament was 4 37 mm cannon with250 rpg and 4 0.5 machine guns in remotely controlled turrets, or 1 75 mm cannon with 20 rounds, and 2 0.5 guns with300rpgin the nose plus 2 turrets. isc
