The 90 string No 3 Squadron paraded at MOTAT on Saturday for a formal photograph in front of the Lancaster. Following this the 3 flights were given behind the scenes visits to the Sunderland and restoration hangar. 3 Squadron have become a younger partner of the NZBCA assisting at services and events. A fine body of young men and women. We were able to pass on a folio of RAF Memorial Flight signed posters and cards for the Squadrons collection

I was in 3 Squadron ATC in the early sixties and slightly later it was 3 Squadron cadets that helped to clean the Lancaster exterior ready foe its paint job when it first arrived at MOTAT (see photos in my "stash" thread

By the way , before the smarties get in , 3 squadron hasn't taken up music meant to say "strong " not string . Digit problem again.
Good stuff Shorty , I guess 3 squadron has been home to thousands of cadets since then ( the 1960s ). I wonder how many found a career in aviation . I was the guide for the front of the ADH and asked each group who is hoping for a career in aviation . Less than a third raised their hands which I thought was surprising. One tall and well built Flight Sergeant was worried was he too big to be a pilot , I replied that there was a regulation sized box pilots had to fit in, but didn't have the heart to say it was only for their heads !! Old joke !!

I was also a member of 3 Squadron 1953 to 57, Ernie Probert was OC, based in the old wartime buildings along Fanshawe Street that taken over by the Auckland Harbour board. Good to see the good work is still going on.

Before Fanshaw St we were in the No 1 Port Depot buildings in Parnell (Fox Street?) Re going on to aviation careers, in # squadron the same time as me were Rick Bulger, Brian Lockey and Mick Murray all who went on to be aircrew, also Ernie Thomson who was with warbirds and had a Chipmunk and a Harvard, Dave Moore who was a SNCO at ASF Woodbourne with me and others whose names escape me at this stage.
