I was more interested in the Air Asia news for Auckland. A few years ago they were doing CHC to KL flights for $200 and I know of at least one member here that took advantage of it. I booked a couple of Air New Zealand tickets yesterday for travel CHC-AKL return in early March for just over $100. I noted then that if I went a little later in the month I could have been in Asia for $250 extra (One way).
I was talking to an engineer in the hangar at Invercargill about why it is difficult to justify using your own GA aircraft about the country. I said I expected to be paying about $100 each way to attend a conference in Auckland, I am sure neither of us expected the tickets to actually cost $49 each way plus a credit card fee of $8. The air ticket INV to CHC cost $65 and I believe the buses are not that much less, possibly the mid 50's area.
While Singapore have one of the better airlines they are not the cheapest. It may be good news for Wellington but Canberra is hardly a hub, certainly an option though and the suit brigade will love it.
Traveling about has to be getting easier, and much cheaper.

$1800 return for Wellington - Singapore is pretty steep.
Out of Auckland, if you scratch around you can get to the UK for less than that.

Despite the way its being promoted, this route isn't really aimed at general tourist travelers - it will however be very popular with Government officials, civil servants and business people, and fares will be less of an issue...

Why would you go WLG->CBR(Intl to Domestic transfer)->SYD(Domestic to Intl transfer)->onwards when you can go WLG->SYD->onwards? Nine across in a SingAir B777 is better than many options trans-Tasman, but hardly worth 2 extra border crossings and an hour in a turboprop.

Can you explain your reasoning behind not wishing to visit/transit through Auckland, and why you think Air New Zealand is an Auckland airline? Or is this one of those "Wellington-attitude to the world" things? Personally I'd take Air New Zealand over any other airline that flies around NZ and in and out of this country. And I have always found Auckland Airport much more user friendly than Wellington Airport which I always find a bit of a bizarre mishmash of a place. At least Auckland Airport has never lost my luggage, unlike Wellington Airport...

The new flights might shut up the fools who always spout nonsense on news and social media about big jets not being able to fly into Wellington though.

Well yeah, if you live in the Wellington area and can take a direct flight from Wellington to your overseas destination it is a no-brainer. Any transfers en route anywhere in the world are a pain. So that is understandable.
It's just Swingtail's comments about Auckland specifically that are odd. And about Air New Zealand being-Auckland-centric.

It will be interesting to see how these flights stack up in a years time and hmmm, in 5 years time. www.intervistas.com/Like Peter I put some dates in and came up with $1800 also. The other airline was $300 to Singapore and $400 coming back, the catch being of course that it is Auckland fares I have quoted. I know many of the Asian students in ChCh fly to Melbourne and then catch the KL flights. It still works out a little over $450 one way I believe. I expect my low fare target to Singapore to be $500. I have even flown to Bali then domestic to Batam, it is then just a quick ferry trip over to downtown Singapore. Those flights would have little in common with cruising along with Singapore Airlines though.

Sorry if I upset you in anyway with my reasoning, my personal preference is not to transit through Auckland if I have to. My Attitude is not Wellington to the world, simply because I don't live in Wellington. The reference to "Air Auckland", it has been an in-house name for airline for quite a few years now, many of the Air New Zealand staff use it as a bit of fun! Sorry to hear about your luggage problems, please make sure the label is securely attached and the bar code is not scratched, sometimes that causes a few issues. Thanks for the message. Cheers!

I'm not upset at all, don't worry. And there was nothing wrong with the labeling on my bag that went walkabout. Just human error (which Air New Zealand sorted out for me).
